This is an ugly hack for automatic runway selection on startup based on
metar data. It's main intention is to make startup.nas obsolete and
to guarantee the same runway selection logic as used for AI traffic.
Calling presets-commit from startup.nas during the initialization
sequence caused occasional trouble and sometimes, the AI traffic
operated on the opposite runway.
The tag <initialize-to> can be used to control the value
of the output when the component is first enabled. This
controls initialization of the output property and the current
value for internal computation
Valid values are
<initialize-to>input</initialize-to>
set the output-property to the input value
<initialize-to>output</initialize-to>
set the output-property to the output value
<initialize-to>none</initialize-to>
ignore input and output value
_dialog_props holds SGSharedPtrs (pointers managed by reference counters).
Explicitly casting the object to an unmanaged SGPropertyNode* and deleting it
may cause heap corruption, since the following assignment "_dialog_props[..] = ..."
also tries to delete the (already deleted) object.
The automatic runway selection code in startup.nas depends
on a valid metar before /sim/signals/nasal-dir-initialized
is fired. If the METAR arrives after that signal, no automatic
runway selection is performed. This patch waits for a METAR
on the first update() loop of the subsystem.
Signature of Predictor::configure must match AnalogComponent::configure,
otherwise the inherited method isn't overridden.
=> predictor couldn't be configured.
=> speed predictor rules in "generic-autopilot-helper.xml" weren't working.
"nav-loc" and "has_gs" properties were not updated when nav receiver was rebooted.
Shutting down the nav receiver clears all nav outputs (including "nav-loc" and "has_gs").
=> When nav receiver is powered again, all outputs must be updated.
=> "nav-loc" and "has_gs" are only updated when active nav station changes.
=> old nav station must be cleared on shutdown to enforce update on nav reboot...
- Fixed triggering of debug assertion "altitude_callout_voice != NULL" when
altitude callouts were delayed by higher priority warnings.
- Fixed performance bug: MK_VIII::IOHandler::TerrainClearanceFilter::update
sucked CPU time (top #12 in profiler), due to complex "moving average"
calculation on a queue of hundreds/thousands of altitude samples.
Also, pausing the sim caused this queue to grow excessively (by one sample
per update loop) => resuming the sim after pausing it for a long time
resulted in the TerrainClearanceFilter sucking even more CPU time...
=> Number of altitude samples is now limited to 5 samples/sim-time-second
(still more than enough to calculate a stable average).
* Fixed segfault when GPWS finds a matching airport but no suitable runway.
* Fixed several sim deadlocks when GPWS alerts trigger at "strange"
heights (e.g. initial alert height is -5ft or 1e-29...).
* Avoid repitition of GPWS alerts below 30ft, i.e. avoid excessive
repitition when plane becomes airborne at bumpy landings.
Reported on the forum from Thorsten Renk and analyzed by
Hooray, fixes this issue:

This is the initial commit for a reworked environment controller.
The main intention is to decouple the individual modules like
metar fetch, metar properties, environment interpolation etc.
to make it easier for other weather module developers to modify
environment settings.
As a side effect, the dialogs for weather-scenario, weather-conditions,
clouds and precipitations have been merged into a single dialog
--prop:/sim/traffic-manager/dumpdata=true: dumps the currently loaded datafile to the console for inspection.

The autopilot has grown beyond being just an autopilot. It's
components, filters and controllers could be used to set property
values based on complex rules and driven from other property values.
That's why I chose to give it the name "property-rule".
This patch allows to define an arbitrary number of property rules under
a/sim/property-rule[n]/path
using the same syntax as autopilot configurations.
This is the first part of the local-weather implementation
of Thorsten Renk, currently written entirly in Nasal. Here
comes the terrain-sampling subsystem as a first step. It is
not (yet) included in the build process which will be
performed when the system has a little matured.
Only block callouts which were actually issued to the pilot. When
multiple callouts trigger at the same time, allow lower prio warnings
to be issued once the higher prio ones are resolved.
=> Gear/flap warnings are now working reliably (no longer blocked
permanently when altitude callouts are enabled).
- Point the homedir variable to %APPDATA%/flightgear.org. This
enables .fgfsrc in this path for windows users.
- Evaluate the returncode of gethostname() to not strdup() bogus
characters on failure. Also mainly on windows.

Add helper to look for an aircraft branch path in multiple candidate locations.
Update the main subsystems to use the helper, and hence load from any aircraft dir.
This fix (re)enables the setting of temperature and
dewpoint from the weather-conditions dialog and other
sources for various altitude layers. These temperatures
are reduced to the corresponding sea level temperatures
according to ICAO standard atmosphere which is the inverse
function of the calculation of temperature at altitude based
on sea-level-temperature.
Note: this only works for the troposphere.
Add the same computation of /position/altitude-agl-ft for
the magic carpet fdm as it is used in the ufo fdm. This
property is used in the environment controller to interpolate
between the individual weather-condition layers.

Split the former single-file-implementation in xmlauto.?xx into multiple
files and use some OO techniques. Started with documentation to be used

A small patch to allow the user to ignore specific
MP aircraft on a per-MP instance basis by setting
"controls/invisible". This
property name was chosen for consistency with the existing property
for AIBallistic objects.
- METAR changes caused strong aircraft movements if the station temperature or field elevation changed. Temperature and dewpoint are now also slowly interpolated to reach the new value.
- Probably unnoticed bug: calculation of the interpolation speed was wrong.
- some minor code-cleanup
collect flight data while the replay was running, but along the way someone
(who shall remain nameless) tweaked a property name and didn't update the
name in the replay system. This led to a problem where the replay system
continued to collect replayed data into the buffer while it replayed it,
leading to an infinite loop. And then due to the tiered recording rate
system, you would never see the highly detailed final minute of your flight.
This is now fixed!
Old calculation was
output = input * gain
and is now
output = (input-reference) * gain
Note: the PI(D) controller use (reference-input) which effectively reverses the sign. Our notation was picked for backwards compatibility to not break the myriads of <filter> elements currently existing.
All the rest is some code cleanup.
"logic filters" use well known conditions to drive output properties. Example for bax = baz & (foo | bar).

Supports various new editing features, including dragging to re-order, and
+/- keys to adjust the target altitude for a waypoint. Also displays some
additional information, and will display *even* more once I land airways/
SID/STAR support.
issue is numerical problems in _wgs84_inverse, triggered by the traffic-manager
testing enormous distances geodetically.

- refactor AISchedule::update, so the aircraft approximate position
calculation is simpler.

Guard against invalid font names in panel XML files, and make font name
comparisons case-insensitive so that 'helvetica', 'Helvetica' or 'HELVETICA'

little mistake when someone changed how the probe calculations are made.
probe 0 is under the plane. probe 4 should be downwind, probes 1,2 and 3 should be upwind.

The track is computed between two subsequent settings of the geodetic position and represents the true track.
Also the _set_Latitude() and _set_Longitude() methods were removed. Use _set_Geodetic_Position(lat,lon) instead.
This establishes a default state of using the OpenGL fixed function pipeline.
Otherwise a shader program from a state set can leak into state sets that don't
use shaders at all.

This little patch makes the KT-70 read 888-8888 when in self-test mode.
This is the correct behavior, the current behavior, where it reads the
flight level and squawk code in self-test is incorrect.
Add a view debugging functions and represent the viewer quats in the property tree for debugging.
Do a nontrivial calculation, demonstrating how to find the 12:00 orientation given the view and the view offset. it, and observe that the 12:00 direction does not change when you change the view offset, which is a nontrivial result.
Erik: This already proved to be useful since I now obserbed that the sky and fog coloring code depends on view offset rather that the view orientations. This is why those effects are out of line in some views.

While troubleshooting the new environment I discovered the metar station
elevation (station_elevation_ft) is never being set because there is a
local variable that overrides it.

The cause of the crash is that some subsystems (input and gui) call get_subsystems() at their destructor.
This is very dangerous since SGSubSystemMgr::get_subsystem() can refer to already deleted subsystems.

Modified: let AxisElement to generate normalized input (-1.0 to 1.0).
This can be temporal and can be removed when AxisEvent normalizes its value.

Additionally to the original fix (problem with the Tec2b matrix initialization) I have modified the code for the "STRUCTURE" contacts in order not to generate NaNs when the z direction of the body frame is normal to the ground normal. Now there should no longer be any NaN generated by the landing gear code.
- Make sure to initialize the groundnetwork after succesful loading.
- Ensure that the AI groundnetwork code proximity detection code used the
correct values for bearing. (Note that detecting the proximity of the
user aircraft appears still to be broken. I'll look into that later).
gcc -Wall -Werror turned up some problems with the type-punning of pointers
used to write the message buffer; it turns out that truncated ints were being
written to the message buffer when values needed to be swapped to network byte
order.
Move fgviewer code into fgfs binary. Its osgViewer-style main function is
called from bootstrap.cxx if the --fgviewer argument is passed to fgfs.
Use fgfs initialization functions in fgviewer codepath. Read
command-line arguments and autosave.xml.
CameraGroup implementation and that is not used by flightgear.

The osgViewer needs to be "realized" so that, among other things, threading
will start. This is normally done by osgViewer::run, but we don't call
that.
Don't realize graphics contexts; Let osgViewer code do it. This way
osgViewer::isRealized returns the correct answer.

This allows to display objects that are in /ai/models/, but not managed
by the AI manager, and it follows fgfs' design principle that subsystems
should communicate over the property tree (if possible). This is a tad
slower, but the radar is only updated once every second.

The current code still has some rough edges, in particular memory still
needs to be deallocated where possible, and the actual use of the code
needs more testing. This code has been running without noticable problems,
so I think it's ready for some wider exposure. Detailed changes include:
- Finetuning of the SID/STAR data concept.
- Preloading of all SIDs, from one xml file.
- ATC determines which SID should be used and echoes this over the com1 or
com2 radio.

experimental: Only one SID per runway is supported, and the waypoints are
read from file at every request, which is not very efficient. The current
code is only executed when FlightGear is configured to use airport dynamics
data from the scenery repository, instead of the base package. Since the
latter is still the default, I believe that this will provide enough safe-
guarding to commit SID/STAR support in small, incremental steps.
Next step will be buffering and support for multiple departure routes per
runway.
Background are problems modeling the rotax 912 engine. The idle speed
of the real engine is about half of the speed I could achieve with the
default minimum manifold pressure. While on ground I can switch off
the engine by pulling the throttle. The audible difference between the
different minimum idle speed (real vs. simulated) is extreme. With the
patch I get quite realistic sound. For the rotax engine I use
min-throttle="0.05" which is half of the former default value.
localtime() is once commented out in simgear/io/sg_binobj.cxx and
a warning says the it can screw up sim time. This is only because
localtime() isn't thread-safe (and its thread-safe cousin localtime_r()
isn't portable). As long as all timing is done in the main thread
(which is the case) there should be no problem. Otherwise we'd have
to implement a simple mutex locked wrapper.
* Changed the runway XX. ATC message to actually report the real
designated departure runway
* In case of multiple active runways, select the one with a heading that is
closest to the direction of the ultimate departure destination / lines up
with the arrival path.
This gets rid of a lot of messy code. Although the performance is about
the same as the old code, there is the possibility of a big performance
boost if/when the polytope intersector is taught about KD trees.
- make some char* "const" to silence warnings
This removes the warning that (rarely) occurred if one wrote to a
write protected property with setprop(). While this was a useful
hint, it needlessly floods the terminal if one protected a property
intentionally. (Consider to add an SG_DEBUG warning instead.) It's
now the caller's job to check for the result if it actually cares.
some prepratory work for assigning different operations to different
frequencies. It also returns a stub for returning an ATIS message ID.
Currently, the ATIC information ID is hardcoded to "Sierra", which needs
to be replaced by a dynamic ID once ATIS services are fully integrated
with the new trafficcontrol code. At least, it's marginally more realistic
then the previous information XX. :-).
In multiplaymgr.cxx:
The length of a string property that is too big was written out in the message
even though the string was truncated. Also, it was possible to overrun the
message buffer.
In incoming messages, null-terminate the callsign to prevent any funny
business. Don't believe invalid string lengths. Turn the warning about unknown
properties from a warning into info; there are too many buggy clients out there,
not to mention people who add their own MP properties (hi vivian :)
and radials, as well the selected ADF frequency to be transmitted to Atlas
DT: Two minor modifications to the adf part to make it work, and some
testing.
* Some support for geometry information provided by the custom scenery
project. Current support is for AI groundnets and runway use files only
since this is a switch that involves a lot of data verification and
updating, during the transistion the actual path where the data can be
read from is user configurable. setting the property
/sim/traffic-manager/use-custom-scenery-data to true
will cause flightgear to read the ground networks from the scenery
directory (--{fg-scenery}/Airports/[I]/[C]/[A]/[ICAO].groundnet.xml to be
precise). Setting this property to false will retain the original
behvior.
* For departing aircraft, runway takeoff calculations will be done on the
basis of the performance database. For testing purposes, a performance
estimate for a heavy jet has been added.
Can't reproduce the problem that r1.103 meant to fix, but it
caused another problem: MMB dragging events weren't passed,
so e.g. power lever control in the bo105 stopped working.
T_PositionMsg had different sizes on 32 and 64 bit systems, which is bad when
a struct is put directly into an network message.
Try to work around this difference in old clients still on the network.
up in list/textbox etc. (This should really be separately settable
via style definition, but it's very rarely used and a change now
is probably not worth it as we'll probably switch to osgWidget,
anyway.)
there is no valid active runway. This is not ideal, since it masks underlying
problems - the real fix is to make the runway-use code more robust and
validate input XML.
instrument of the same name. In the future I'd prefer to rename the
instrument class instead (FGMarkerBeaconReciever?) but this is the safest
change for now.

affect MSVC more than gcc)
notion of a 'displacedThreshold'. Now there's just a real threshold,
displaced or otherwise, and people who care about the paved area can use
'begin' and 'end'. Thanks to John Denker for pointing out the confusion this
leads to. Using 'end' also gets rid of the 'reverseThreshold' name, which was
clearly a bad choice of mine.
saving for beacons, but since they're surprisingly few (in nav.dat), not a
an enormous saving in real terms. The major motivation is that marker beacons
don't behave like other NavRecords for radio interaction - they have no ident,
frequency or range (in the sense that NavRecord means them).
This makes taxiways smaller (important since at present there are so many).
Restructure the apt.dat parsing code to use a helper class instead of one long
function, and to do less work when parsing the file.
Some of these ideas come from Yon Uriarte's patches - thanks Yon.
This was lost when I stopped cloning the near camera to make the far
camera. The result was a lot of breakage, including explicit camera
configurations not working and various ordering issues too.
This seems to be accepted OSG usage for slave cameras. It's possible
that this order is important for rendering instruments that use RTT
textures on systems without frame buffer object support. I'm thinking
that the resulting bugs may be implicated in the "black rectangle" problem.
The near/far boundary, called "near-field", can be set to 0 which
disables the far camera and renders the whole scene using only one
camera. I'm hoping that this may be useful in resolving some
system-specific rendering bugs.
Various fixes were made to correctly render the scene using only the
near camera.
airportList search function. At least for me (with a mutex-based SGAtomic),
large vectors of referenced-pointers is a Bad Thing - copying on vector
resize is thrashing the locks.
static FGAirport helpers. As a result, another global index goes away. Use
the helpers to avoid ugly FGPositioned down-casts in various places.
Also converts the environment/METAR code to deal with FGAirport pointers,
instead of string identifiers, and contains work-in-progress code to implement
the AirportList dialog using FGPositioned. This isn't enabled yet for various
reasons, but is the final piece to allow FGAirportList to be removed.

Add a helper predicate to FGAirport to encapsulate the common 'does this
airport have a suitable runway of at least xxxx ft?' query. Also add a
FGPositioned filter built on the predicate, and a 'closest airport' helper.

reverts one of my changes which ensured that the 3D clouds were updated with
METAR. Unfortunately this had the side-effect of over-writing the environment
properties, and therefore nuking the interpolation work.
Attached is yet another 3D clouds patch, to fix the following:
1) The 3D clouds were not modified by the cloud coverage, due to some problems with osg::Switch
2) METAR changes to cloud coverage were not obeyed.
3) Making changes via the Cloud dialog had no effect unless 3D clouds were toggled.
4) Cloud cover was too sparse.
5) 3D Stratus clouds caused performance issues on some hardware (fixed by removing 3D stratus from cloudlayers.xml - it will now be a 2D layer).
displayed garbage in the title line if one left a directory. Jester
spent a lot of time finding the cause: a bug that must have been
there since ... forever: fgfs reported to PUI the string addresses
as returned by SGPropertyNode::getStringValue() without considering
that this address isn't valid after the next write access to that
node! It's almost a miracle that it worked so well for so long,
despite that issue. (I also used to opportunity for some more
cleanup -- so I'm to blame for any newly introduced bugs, and
also for reverting some of Jester's cleanups. :-)
- Removes the cloud type re-use code - I think they aren't worth the graphical artefacts that they cause in light of Tim's improvements
- Changes the transparency of the clouds. Previously, the clouds were transparent at 0m distance, opaque at 200m, then gradually more transparent to the fog limits. This meant they were generally quite transparent. Now, they are opaque from 200m to 15km, then become transparent at 20km. A side effect of this is that the current textures could probably benefit from being made slightly transparent to improve the blending of the sprites against each other.
Here's a patch which refactors the 'plain' GPS code into a slightly
more manageable structure - i.e breaks the large update() method into
various sub-functions. I've tested the patch with B1900d, and things
seem to work as expected, but if anyone experiences GPS weirdness
after this is committed, of course please report it.
The motivation for this was helping me learn the code - I've planning
some changes in this area, and splitting up the logic will hopefully
make that task easier.

- Add some variance to the sort back-off to avoid all clouds being sorted at the same time.
- Pack attributes into vectors for performance
- Re-order the cloud type determination code so that if a cloud layer could either be stratus or cumulus, cumulus is used.
- Lowered the cloud level in the standard cloud configuration slightly so a cumulus layer is generated rather than stratus.
These last two mean that you should see some 3D cumuli if disabling real weather fetch.

Attached patch updates the route-manager to use FGPositioned to search
for waypoints, instead of a manual airport / fix / navaid search. This
is good because it's now using the 'strictly closest' match, rather
than arbitrarily picking a distant fix over a nearby navaid. In my
case, the TLA VOR is significant to several EGPH procedures, but also
happens to be the ident of a fix a long, long way away.
Also updates the FGPositioned class to stop using Point3D, partly
because it's deprecated and partly because I had misunderstood the
interface and was using it wrong. For now, all FGPositioned distance
checks use SGGeodesy::inverse, which is accurate but inefficient. Once
FGPositioned queries are used for something on a hot path, I'll
probably store the cartesian position as well as the geodetic, to make
these checks fast.
Right now, atlas.cxx uses the following code, in
FGAtlas::gen_message(), to retrieve the ADF frequency:

These functions are now called in fgOSMainLoop. The fgMainLoop
function was being called twice, which resulted in a slow-down, but
also caused the displayed frame rate to double!
free /models/model[*] slot and lets the model manager load the
model. The target address is returned under "property". Simple

pointing to a node that can be changed at runtime to move the model.

are picked up before the view update rather than the next cycle.
This avoids ugly fluttering of "passengers" at higher speed.
Partition depth in CameraGroup:
Remove the ViewPartionNode scenegraph node. The split rendering of the
scene, done to avoid Z buffer precision problems, is now done by two
slave cameras of the viewer.
Rename FGManipulator to FGEventHandler.
Remove virtual member functions that aren't required for event handlers.
Begin using camera group properties to update cameras at runtime;
Initially only the viewport properties are used.
When no camera group is found in the property tree (the default),
create the properties for one. Expose the default window by name.
Add a test for Boost headers to configure.ac. Boost is now a
dependency.
Remove GLUT and SDL versions of the OSG graphics.
stabilize some of the odd artifacts we were hearing, that were especially
noticable in clean sound samples like the stall horn or the marker beacon
codes. The change still preserves the doppler effect and maintains the
good work of a previous developer figuring out how to align the model and
listener velocity vectors correctly.
It fixes the following issues (to a greater or lesser extent):
1) Performance. Quad trees used to improve culling, and the sprites are placed on the surface of a sphere rather than
randomly throughout the cloud, requiring fewer textures. This saves about 5-10fps on my machine.
2) Disabled 3D clouds have no performance impact. Previously they were still in the scenegraph. Now they are removed.
3) Clouds are now loaded on start-up, and don't require the scenario to be changed, they also work with METAR.
4) The cloud field is shifted as you travel. There's a small bug in that the clouds "jump" as you reach the edge of the field.
5) Iterative sorting of sprites. This doesn't appear to solve the alpha blending problem completely, but may help a bit.
the case where the removed child has no other referants, otherwise it
will be deleted on function exit. Also give the ghost type a name for
cleaner debugging.
or the unit was not serviceable. This search() routine needs to run every
iteration no matter what the power or serviceable state. If power is turned
off or the unit becomes unserviceable while a beacon sound is playing, the
search() routine still needs to be called so the sound effect can be properly
disabled.
This was a source of a spew of "NaN" error messages at night when the
sun is at a large angle to the zenith. I don't know why this wasn't a
problem before now.
This patch changes terrasync so it links against the subversion
library if you have it installed. It supports people who build binary
releases for use by non-developers by removing the runtime external
dependency on having command line svn or rsync available. Since the
patch changes autoconf to detect libsvn, I'd appreciate it if people
who release binaries could verify that the detection scripting works
for their platform.
Developer warning: If you do have libsvn developer libraries
installed, terrasync changes its default option from "-R" to "-S" to
remove the command line dependency. However, Martin has not yet
uploaded world scenery into the subversion repository so it won't be
useful to fly against and you may want to specify "-R" on the command
line in the short term. Or run both.

Regarding the Runway selection bug:
The logic here is a bit convoluted, but I also had a dumb bug in normaliseBearing - I was clamping to the wrong range (0..360 instead of -180..180). This caused the scoring code to pick weird runways. I've added some extra cases to my local tests, and here's a fix.
Trivial patch, but an important milestone:
Convert FGAirport to inherit FGPositioned. This concludes the first phase of the FGPositioned changes, and hopefully the most intrusive ones - adding in the base class. There's lots (and lots) of further work to do on the indexing and querying side, as well as cleaning up the accessors, but that will happen in single source files, or a group of related files at a time.
As a trivial note, this patch does fix a bug where the very last airport in apt.dat would get an invalid type. So for all you people who just love to fly to EHYB (Ypenburg, The Hague), things may work a little more sanely.
I'll intentionally let the dust settle after this patch, so any weird behaviour I may potentially have introduced shows up. Just to re-iterate, so far there should be absolutely no user-visible change in the behaviour of anything - navaids, position init, the route manager, AI flight plans, etc. If there is, please let me know and I'll fix it ASAP.
By way of example, here's a patch to make the position init code (in fg_init.cxx) cleaner, partly thanks to the FGPositioned changes. It reduces the file size by 200 lines - virtually all of which was copy-and-paste. Once the remaining class (FGAirport) is converted to inherit FGPositioned, all the future patches should be like this - touching one or a few files at most.
This factors the start-offset logic out into a helper, which also does the final property setting (which has to happen on both the /preset and 'real' values). Using the accessors in FGPositioned, and the offset helper, a couple of cases become trivial (fix and nav) and others become much simpler.
Convert FGNavRecord to inherit FGPositioned. This is much more self-contained than the FGRunway change, since FGNavRecord already had good encapsulation of its state. However, it's a large diff due to moving around two nasty pieces of code - the 'align navaid with extended runway centerline' logic and the 'penalise transmitters at the opposite runway end' logic.
In general things are more readable because I've replaced the Navaid type enum, and the use of Robin's integer type codes, with switches on the FGPositioned::Type code - no more trying to recall that '6' is an outer marker in Robin's data. The creation code path is also pushed down from navdb into navrecord itself.
Convert FGRunway to be heap-based, and inherit FGPositioned. This is a large, ugly change, since FGRunway was essentially a plain struct, with no accessors or abstraction. This change adds various helpers and accessors to FGRunway, but doesn't change many places to use them - that will be a follow up series of patches. It's still a large patch, but outside of FGAirport and FGRunway, mostly mechanical search-and-replace.
An interesting part of this change is that reciprocal runways now exist as independent objects, rather than being created on the fly by the search methods. This simplifies some pieces of code that search for and iterate runways. For users who only want one 'end' of a runway, the new 'isReciprocal' predicate allows them to ignore the 'other' end. Current the only user of this is the 'ground-radar' ATC feature. If we had data on which runways are truly 'single-ended', it would now be trivial to use this in the airport loader to *not* create the reciprocal.
Here's part 2 - converting FGFix (the simplest one) to be both heap-based and inherit FGPositioned. One minor benefit from this is replacing some dangerous code in FGFixList which used to return the address of an iterator member ('&it->second'). To keep the diff a sensible size, I'm not updating the callers to use the richer FGPositioned types - i.e replacing separate lat/lon handling with SGGeod. I will make those cleanups, but in future patches.
If someone could kindly apply the attached patch, that'll keep this from crashing, I believe. The fix is easy since FGAirport can now always provide an active runway - there's no need to guess at random, or rely on the tower having set one up.
Small patch fixing bugs I've encountered while getting the current CVS to build in MSVC.
* std::lower_bound was used with the key-type of a map, but lower_bound expects the value-type of the collection it works on, with is std::pair. MSVC seems to be more strict about this.
* Added an missing include statement.
* Replaced an rint() call with floor() (MSVC does not offer rint).
Here is a little patch that changes the behaviour of the VOR CDI and OFF-flag
for indicators like the HSI when getting outside the range of the VOR
station.
Currently, when flying at a distance between the effective_range and twice the
effective_range of a VOR station, the in-range property is computed based on
a random value, causing the OFF Flag and the CDI bar to perform an ugly
jitter.
The attached patch introduces a new property signal-quality-norm which is
computed based on the distance to the station and the range. It is 1.0 when
the distance is less than the range and decreases by 1/x^2 for distances
greater than the range leading to a signal-quality-norm of 0.25 for distances
two times the range, 0.125 for three times the range and so on.
The in-range flag is tied to a signal-quality-norm greater than 0.2 (fixed
squelch).
The CDI and GS needle deflection is multiplied with the signal-quality-norm.
The benefit is:
- Ability to animate the OFF-Flag with a smooth transition.
- CDI and GS needle deflection shows correct values when in range
(signal-quality-norm=1.0) and show some wrong indication when the range is
exceeded
- CDI and GS needle start to move, even when the OFF flag is visible
- No more jitter for flag and needles

Good news: I'm working on some automatic testing of the 'core' FG pieces, especially those I'm likely to break in my Navaids / airports / runways work
Bad news: I already broke something, in my runways refactoring. (But my tests caught it!)
Attached patch fixes it - it's (of course) the stupidest thing in the world. Incidentally, standardising this kind of code into some (inlined) header is becoming more and more of a priority for me - I've lost count of the number of times I've seen the 'clamp heading to 0..360.0' and 'reverse a heading and clamp it' idioms in the code. The KLN89 and MkVIII code have (of course) their own helpers for this.
This is a little intrusive on the KLN89 code, but avoids the wasteful cloning of the airports, runways and navaids which current happens, and also combines the ugly string ordering code.
- removes various members from FGRunway which no-one was using
- any of these can be trivially re-instated if and when someone
actually wants to use them - but right now they're simply bloating up
FGRunway, which we have lots of, because it currently includes all the
taxiways in Robin's data.

of their own.

use <enabled>false</enabled> flag for widgets that shouldn't be drawn
instead of <hide>true</hide>. This is consistent with other places
in fgfs, like menu entries, hud elements, subsystem switches, etc.
Attached patch + new file make FGNavRecord have a .cxx file, and a constructor w
hich allows all the parameters to be supplied. Along the way I also cleaned up t
he navrecord.hxx header, lots more header pollution has been killed.
Some long methods are no longer inline, but were all suspiciously long to meet c
ompiler inlining criteria (I'm not clear if the 'inline' keyword is advisory or
mandatory in this situation) - I don't expect this to affect performance in any
way whatsoever.
The constructor addition is to support some hacking I'm doing improving the star
tup performance of the navDB by lazily loading the data, and caching it in a mor
e efficient format than text. I'm submitting this change (and probably some othe
r small tweaks in the future) since they are worthwhile as cleanups regardless o
f how my current experiments work out.
CameraGroup supports cameras opened in different windows or in the
same window, with flexible view and perspective specification.
Clean up mouse click handling via osgViewer. Don't let any camera
"have focus;" this forces events to be reported in window coordinates
and simplifies life. Don't use the osgViewer::View::requestWarpPointer
method; instead use our own code which only deals with window
coordinates.
Make glut and sdl versions work with CameraGroup too.
I thought that this would fix the "black hole in the sky" problem,
which turned out to be caused by an OpenSceneGraph bug. Nevertheless
it is a simplification.
* experimental clean-up / reduction on two of the FG headers:
(I'm going to await feedback on the developers list before doing more of
these, to avoiding going over files multiple times, but in principle it
seems pretty straightforward.)
* final fixes for SG_USING_STD removal
- this exposed a bizarre issue on Mac where dragging in <AGL/agl.h> in
extensions.hxx was pulling in all of Carbon to the global namespace
- very scary. As a result, I now need to explicitly include CoreFoundation
in fg_init.cxx.
- change SG_USING_STD(x) to using std::x
SimGear change. It changes all the SG_xxxx to be the 'real' includes, and gets
rid of many #ifdef SG_HAVE_STD_INCLUDES. As an added bonus, rather than
replacing 'SG_USING_NAMESPACE(std)' with 'using namespace std', I just fixed
the small number of places to use std:: explicitly. So we're no longer polluting
the global namespace with the entire contents of std, in many cases.
There is one more 'mechanical' change to come - getting rid of SG_USING_STD(X),
but I want to keep that separate from everything else. (There's another
mechnical change, replacing <math.h> with <cmath> and so on *everywhere*, but
one step at a time)
PLETE_FUNCTIONAL from SimGear and FlightGear.
As a result, SG_HAVE_STD_INCLUDES is now *always* set, so I will get the boring
fixes for that done, but separately. I'm still auditing the other things in comp
ilers.h - there's a lot that can die now BORLAND is gone.
- remove the OSX_BUNDLE crap *I* introduced years ago - we're always a a bun
dle on Mac now.
- fix up the default fg-root on Mac to be FlightGear.app/Contents/Resources/
data - i.e the location used by the macflightgear.org distro, and indeed the obv
ious 'correct' location. Not sure why I didn't use that in the first place, back
in the day.
- remove the CPSForegroundEnable hack. For one thing, we're a bundle and don
't need it, and for another, osgViewer on Mac does the same logic using a newer,
public API rather than a hack into the OS.
- remove the strange logic for doing fgOSInit 'early' (in bootstrap rather t
han main) when running from the command line on Mac; again this is obsolete, and
no one seems to know why it was ever necessary. I guess it was an interaction w
ith SDL when running without a bundle.
- (not Mac related) remove obsolete code bracketed by ENABLE_PLIB_JOYSTICK a
nd USE_GLIDE (neither of which are ever set, even from config.h that I can see)
in main.cxx
Various other patches that have been lingering around for a while:
* Moved trafficcontrol.[ch]xx from the Airports directory to ATC, where
it really belongs.
* AI aircraft will request startup clearance, and ground control will
approve.
* Starting AI Aircraft will be pushed back to a predefined holding point
on the ground network, and wait a while before taxiing out to the runway
- drop unused parts (MouseQuat/GuiQuat)
- move "old-reinit-dialog" fgcommand to fg_command.cxx under new name
"reset" for now. (May later get merged with fgcommand "reinit".)
- move reInit() to fg_init.cxx: This was used by Shift-Esc and
Menu->File-Reset (via fgcommand "old-reinit-dialog"). We have already
a similar function fgReInitSubsystems() in fg_init.cxx, so these two
functions will probably get merged later.)

should make it more consistent, but this isn't really something that
should be exposed to the Nasal developer.)

This isn't any more of a security problem as other Nasal code that
makes fgfs crash, such as: var x = func call(x); x(); The difference
is that the listener doesn't use up all memory before and is much quicker.
- don't allow to do that from any XML file. This is to prevent malign
code from writing a new fg-home in ~/.fgfs/autosave.xml or other files
in ~/.fgfs/.
After the changes that moved the GUI and HUD to a slave camera, the
texture-based fonts wouldn't display. The main fixes here are making
sure that the TXF textures are all loaded into the font cache early,
and explicitly setting the active texture unit in the GUI / HUD
drawImplementation.

- use ::hasValue() instead of ::getType() != SGPropertyNode::NONE
- consistency fixes and cosmetics
Switch to defining PU_USE_NONE and providing our own callback
functions to pui for "get window" and "get window size." A new
WindowSystemAdapter class assigns ID numbers to windows for the
purpose of identifying them to plib; the window size can be extracted
from the osg::GraphicsContext class in all the different
implementations (osgViewer, glut, sdl).
Implement a GraphicsContextOperation that runs code in a particular
graphics context, perhaps in another thread, and provides an
isFinished() method to test if the operation has finished. This allows
us to initialize plib PUI properly if there are multiple graphics
contexts without using fgMakeCurrent(). fgMakeCurrent() can't work in
multi-threaded OSG configurations.
Eliminate fgMakeCurrent() and all its uses, either by using
GraphicsContextOperation or by seeing that it is not necessary.
Attach the GUI camera as a slave camera.
Don't manipulate the OSG state in the drawImplementation() functions
for SGHUDAndPanelDrawable and SGPuDrawable; it's not needed.
Attached patch adds support for multiple FIXes with the same name.
Applies to both branches.
New functionality is in query_and_offset, which now returns the FIX
closest to the passed in location.
Updated route manager to take advantage of this.
Otherwise, query functions return an unspecified member from the set
of identically named FIXes. (This was previously the one occurring
last in the database file, but I don't think anybody counted on that.)

- it's hardcoded (we already got rid of all other hardcoded dialogs)

then because I/we assumed that had been superseded by other code
modifications. The local echo problem still persists, however, albeit
under specific circumstances. The current patch reportedly prevents this

Thanks to Vivian Meazza for debugging this. The output deque for
FGDigitalFilter was not being kept long enough for the
doubleExponential filter. Reads from output[1] could cause a crash.

i started the project at the end of february with a simple idea: move all
3d-model loading to the DatabasePager-thread. my first attempts looked
promising, though they were a little too optimistic (or naive?). the patch
has evolved a lot since.
currently it does the following things:
1. revive SGModelLib, move functions for xml-model-loading there
2. replace all calls to sgLoad3dModel with calls to either
SGModelLib::loadModel() or SGModelLib::loadPagedModel()
almost all models will be loaded by the DatabasePager. the few exceptions are:
your own plane, shared models in scenery, random objects, AIBallistic models.
3. simplify mode-loading functions (avoid passing around fg_root)
4. avoid supurious MatrixTransform nodes in loaded models
5. fix some memory leaks
Introduce a convenience member function in wxRadarBg for creating an
SGPropertyNode and initializing it in one step. Use this in
agRadar. This eliminates buggy behavior when the necessary radar
properties aren't defined.

Make FGPrecipitationMgr an SGSubsystem and remove all references to it
in main.cxx and renderer.cxx.
Use SGGeod::makeZUpFrame instead of a private function in
tileentry.cxx. Rewrite that function, WorldCoordinate, to use
makeZUpFrame too.
Makes it possible to start at a parking location defined in the AI/Airports/*/parking.xml files, using the parkpos command line option.
Note that the name to pass is the concatenation of the "name" and "number" fields in the xml.
This allows Nasal managed views thanks to the proximity of the
event manager (which executes Nasal loops). The io manager must
come after the view manager to avoid jitter in network replay.
As discussed with Tim on irc: Here is a quick fix for the memory-hungry tile
manager. Due to bugs in FGNewCache, old tiles were never deleted.
I left the timestamp-updates in the cull-traversal. but imho things work
just as well when timestamps are updated in FGNewCache::insert_tile() and
FGNewCache::get_tile()
Lee has added two new filter types, "gain" and "reciprocal". These filters can
read their gain factor from a property. In the process we also added minimum
and maximum output clamps that are applicable to all filters.
I added the ability to configure adaptive controllers i.e. the controller gain
can be tied to a property, so that it can be changed at runtime. This
requires a change in the xml structure of the autopilot configuration file:

The old method <Kp>0.10</Kp> still works so as to not break all existing
autopilots, but it will output a warning to use the new method.

Remove the call to build() in reinit(). This prevents build() from being
called twice when Reload Autopilot is selected from the Debug menu.
I've also added the ability to define an enabled property for the filters.
It's used like the PID controllers. If there is no enabled tag then the
filter defaults to enabled so that nothing should get broken by this change.
This ability can be used to create a filter between the output of a PID
controller and the property that it controls (a control surface). By putting
a noise spike filter between the output of a controller and the control
surface that it controls, we can simulate the limited movement rate that is
inherent in autopilot servos.
This patch contains bugfixes from my previous patch
(i made mistakes when using "diff" utility last time):
1. Now ATC do not tells us to go around because of
traffic on RWy, when that traffic is WE.
2. Now ATC don't say that we must follow ourself
(like "GFS, number two, follow GFS on final").
And new Tower-ATC features:
1. Requesting departure clearance. When you are
on taxiway, you can request departure clearance.
Tower will answer with something like:
"Line up runway two eight right".
TODO: check if any AI-Planes on final and tell
something like: "After the landing AI-CALLSIGN
line up runway two eight right".
2. Requesting take-off clearance. If you are on
runway, you can tell to ATC that you are ready
for take-off. So, Tower will tell you that you
are cleared for take-off (or immediate take-off).
3. Reporting landing gear position on final by pilot.
If you are on aircraft, which landing gear can
be UP, when reporting final you will tell
"Gear down, ready to land".
4. Reporting landing gear position on final by ATC.
When i was newbie and was flying on Cessna 310, i
ALWAYS forgot landing gears on final. Now if you are on
final and forgot landing gear, Tower will tell you:
"LANDING GEAR APPEARS UP" or "Check wheels down and
locked". So you will have some time to push gear
down or execute missed approach ;)
5. ATIS phonetic ID in requesting landing message.
In FG pilots says: "for full stop with ATIS" everytime
(when airport doesn't have ATIS too). But in real life
pilot saying phonetic ID of ATIS message. Now we have:
"for full stop, information alpha ... / ... zulu".
If airport doesn't have ATIS, pilot don't say this.
TODO: add this feature to AI-Planes too.
6. Advising weather condition in airport by Tower.
If you are requesting take-off or landing in airport
that doesn't have ATIS service, Tower will tell you
about wind direction and speed, visibility and QFE.
7. Reporting downwind if missed approach. When some AI-Plane
is on final FG's ATC tell you to "continue approach".
And then you lost radio transmission. Now ATC says:
"continue approach and report left/right downwind".
And now we have "Report Downwind" entry (button)
in "ATC Communication" form.
This also fixes distortion weirdness in the osgviewer version. That
was caused by osg::GraphicsContext getting in the act on resize events
and adding its own scaling to the projectionOffset of slave cameras!
The LOD far range on the tile entry scenegraph node was initialized to
0. This meant that any traverals of active children that happened
before the tile manager updated the node would ignore the node
altogether. Among these is the groundcache traversal which was failing
at startup even though scenery was loaded.
Also added a function to dump scene graph nodes to files; very handy
in gdb.
Make an OSG file reader for .stg files.
New class flightgear::SceneryPager, which is a subclass
osg::DatabasePager to handle explicit delete requests.
Modify FGNewCache, FGTileEntry, and FGTileManager to use
SceneryPager. Mostly this involved removing the queues that talked to
FGTileLoader.
Calculate accurate tile timestamps from the time they are traversed in
the cull stage (which means that they are visible) instead of updating
them periodically.
Replace tile entry transform and range node with one LOD node
This fixes a race condition when teleporting somewhere outside of the
currently loaded scenery. Before, if there was no valid scenery, an
aircraft might end up at the center of the earth...
Instead of just reporting that the magic number, length, etc. of a
multiplayer packet is invalid, abort processing this packet. Also,
check if enough space remains to send a property string.

_material was uninitialized. This was causing a segfault with
as-yet-to-be-checked-in paging code; I don't know if it ever resulted
in a segfault with the old tile loader, but it certainly could have.

model to some other format or coordinate system for use in some other
visualization or simulation.
This is required to make sure the same letter key gets released,
which got the press event. (After Ctrl-press -> a-press -> Ctrl-release

This removes some jitter in cases where Nasal is used to set up view
parameters from FDM data, such as position and orientation. (The event
subsystem handles Nasal's settimer() calls.)
This was correct in the old repository and in revision 1.1 of the new,
but then broken in revision 1.2. After that, "lookat" and "lookfrom"
mode used different coordinate systems, and the "Adjust View Distance"
didn't work correctly in "lookat" mode.

the pressure (which is calculated from that) is lagging by 1 frame.

remove all those 41 hacks if possible. Metrowerks is under category
"Defunct software companies" in Wikipedia, its compiler was known to
work on PowerPC (which we don't support, anway, right?) and on some
Unices. The hacks are in CVS since the first commit 2002/9/10 (old
repository!) and probably were in the code long before that. Any
platform where such a broken compiler is still used, will hardly
be suitable to run fgfs at all.
them under /sim/presets/ but they aren't save there, and as fgInitPosition
and its subroutines overwrite them, we lose the information about what the
user really wanted. This is a temporary solution -- it really belongs into

At least on my computer the sort() call on line 234 in
Environment/environment_ctrl.cxx sorts the vector entries by memory
address instead of altitude, i.e. the custom comparison predicate is not
used. This causes the tables of environment conditions to be reordered
into a wrong order at some weather updates, depending, basically,
on where the memory allocator places the objects. (Btw. why are they are
freshly allocated for each update?)

matters. if (getprop("/foo")), for instance, is TRUE even when the property
contains string "false", as all strings are TRUE.
efficiently performing "Dijkstra algorithm".
Durk Talsma: Added the detection of "circular" wait situations in the AI
ground network. A circular wait is a situation where aircraft a waits for
b; b waits for c; and c (in turn) waits for a. The checkCircularWaits
function detects these situations.
The current "solution" to a circular wait is rather crude: Remove the
aircraft from the scene. A proper solution needs a lot more work, however,
and at least this patch stops the AI system from clogging up. in case of a
circular wait.
data for AI traffic. Default performance classes are still available as a
backup. This database will allow the calculation of aircraft-specific
take-off speed and estimate runway lenght requirements. Further added
rudimentary support for take-off and landing rotation of AIAircraft.
together -- there's only *one* instrument node now

/sim/screneryloaded-override was "true". At least one subsystem (od_gauge)
waits for /sim/sceneryloaded to bypass CPU intensive code until the scenery
is up. This broke e.g. the RTT-radar when using /sim/screneryloaded-override
--prop:sim/sceneryloaded-override=true has the effect that fgfs
doesn't show the splash screen until the scenery is loaded, but shows
the OTW view (scenery/aircraft) at the earliest possible moment. This is
useful for developers who often need to run fgfs only to check some minor
detail, while not caring about stuttering caused by scenery loading.
simple SG_LOG instead. The user didn't call the fgcommand, so why should
s/he be bothered with that? And the actually caller of the command gets a
return value and can pop up a dialog if it thinks it's necessary.
Why /sim/fg-current at all? Because we have a file selector dialog
(still unfinished), and one might like to start it from the current
directory, to find saved flights/screenshots/whatever.

When an impact happens, then the path of the submodel will be written to
this node. An attached listener function can evaluate the impact properties.
at all is that this method is meant to be deprecated. But if it doesn't
say that, and there's no generic replacement at all, then it's rather

- the name is unspecific and inconsistent: other option names describe

because nasal's f_interpolate() may be called in Nasal at times when the
GENERAL subsystem group is being deconstructed; access it by addressing
the group directly, as using globals->get_subsystem() does then not

NasalSys.cxx more robust instead. The reason for the crash was that during
fgfs shutdown destroyed subsystems (GENERAL group) still need Nasal access
(for AI Model destruction listeners), but at that point globals->get_subsystem()
can't even deliver the "nasal" subsystem (INIT group). One way to solve that
problem would have been to replace globals->get_subsystem("nasal") by
globals->get_subsystem_mgr()->get_group(SGSubsystemMgr::INIT)->get_subsystem("nasal"),
but Andy decided to store a pointer to the active "nasal" subsysten in
NasalSys.cxx instead, as the "nasal" subsystem needs to be accessed in
every single Nasal extension function, and multiple "nasal" subsystems are
out of the question, anyway.
we need to explicitly destroy that here, too, so that it has guaranteed
access to the Nasal subsystem. Otherwise we get a segfault on exit. When

There are no *-set.xml files in deeper nested dirs, and with an ever growing
number of aircraft the search just lasts too long.
Here is a patch for two bugs in the AI/multiplayer part:
1. Cannot find model file *.ac error message (was only a false message,
anything worked correctly, the model was loaded from the correct path
afterwards).
2. Often many multiplayer aircrafts are missing in the property-tree.
(but I need them for aerotowing). There is still another bug: The
property in some circumstances seems not to be cleaned up after logout
of a multiplayer. I have added a workaround for this, but I don't now,
if it 100% works (should have no side effects, just aerotow would not
work sometimes). For testing I need more traffic on the mp-server.

I found a small conspicuity in YASim. The destructor of the fdm was
never called, therefore a modification of the heli fdm (not in cvs) did
not work after reset (I tie some properties and untie them in the
destructor, but the destructor was not called and the tieing failed
after reset. I don't know if any other parts of YASim need their
destructors, at least it wastes memory.
Another small fix I have made to the turbulence.cpp. The code needed,
that (a-floor(a)) is >=0 and <1. This is analytical correct, but
numerical only for "small" values. In normal fg-operation a in this
function is always small, but with unrealistic parameters in the
aircraft config file it is not and then fg crashes (instead a crash of
the aircraft or cataputling it far away).

value on a property. This becomes a NaN when converted to a numeric
value, which then percolated into the C++ world where it ultimately
caused a crash in YASim's turbulence code. While converting nil to
NaN isn't *strictly* wrong, it's dangerous for this reason. Toss a
Nasal exception instead. Hopefully this won't break too much
preexisting code.
- Moved AIModels/Traffic Manager related AI functions to a new file
- Rewrote the traffic manager so that the containers use pointers to
objects instead of the objects themselves, which will allow for a
more flexible memory management.
- Rewrote parts of the airport groundnetwork code, also because the
stl containers now contain object pointers instead of the objects
themselves.
- Fixed an uninitialized iterator in the AI distance tracking code
- Fixed flawed logic in some of the traffic controller's while loops
- Added a tower controller, which paces take-off behavior of AITraffic
in a more realistic way.
- Various other minor fixes and fine tuning.
More realistic calculation of vortices at the blades and therefore
real airfoil parameters can be used now (not to be mixed up with the
vortex ring state which is still not simulated), ground effect is now
continuous e. g. at buildings, calculating of the rotor in more than 4
directions, better documentation of the airfoil parameters.
- Well I finally licked it, the clipping works great now, in 16 and 32
bpp mode, on 2d and 3d panels.
- I tried glScissors, didnt work because clipping was done in screen
co-ordinates.
- Stencil buffer methods worked great for 2d panel, but messed up 3d
panels,(depth buffer problems I think), and only worked in 32 bpp mode.
- I then tried clip planes , and so far it appears to work with no
problem, and no framerate drop like I had with the stencil buffer
method...

values that were angles between the aircraft's orientation and the
global velocity vector, not the airflow velocity. So the HUD velocity
vector was wrong when the wind was non-zero. Fix that.
maintain a resonable distance from each other while taxiing on the same
route. The current code does not yet take crossing routes or aircraft
taxiing into opposite directions into account.
If there is a windows problem, look very carefully at the line termination
with a serial port monitor. It should be \r\n (CR-LF), not \n, not \r\r\n
or any other possible variant.
format. I have a Garmin 295 to test with, but so far I haven't been able
to make this work (code should compile cleanly though.) I don't know if
I've made a mistake in the protocol or if my 295 just doesn't support this.
More work on this to come.

channel lookup, which was supposed to be done on channel changes only,

algorithm caused a program crash. Because there is always one waypoint more
than there are routes, the trace function should only pop_back the final route

safeguarding code, due to the fact that the new trace algorithm was
apparently not as stable as I'd hoped it would be. ...
in the case of fg_init.cxx we'll only see that if the log-level is set
in preferences.xml, because command line options weren't even processed
at that time. :-/
generates a data file of aerodynamic lift and drag (and L/D) against
AoA at a specified speed and altitude through a full circle. Wrote it
to track down the YF-23 superthrust issue, but it wasn't any help.
All the forces look fine.
state. The only really obvious problem was a giant negative engine
RPM, which happened because of a lack of clamping in the engine code
combined with the YF-23's ability to actually reach speeds near the
engines _vMax value. It's not clear to me that this will fix the
superthrust issue at high AoA's, but it's an obvious bug nonetheless.
+ The wing compilation step was accidentally omitting regions that lie
between the tips and the first/last control object. That's a real
problem for wings that contain no controls, and a significant issue
for those that contain only a few. I'm stunned that this went
undetected for so long.
+ The Surface::flapLift() function was oddly returning 1.0 Newtons as
a minimum, instead of zero.
(this was the reason why the first two text lines on the splash screen
looked more blurry than the others). BTW: I played with other values
than -0.5, but this turned out to be the best already. It makes textures
sharper than 0, but not too sharp (and thus flickering).

Traffic manager initialization related changes:
- Schedules initialize "on the fly", instead of during initialization
- Invalid routes are no longer deleted, but marked as BOGUS and ignored
- Changed loading order from a distance based prioritization to a point-
score based prioritization, resulting in a much faster establisment of
AIAircraft near the user's plane.
Preparatory work for ground-based separation of Aircraft.
- The groundnetwork findShrortestRoute function not only returns a list
of waypoints, but also a list of taxi "segments" (a.k.a. taxiways).
- The taxiway list is stored in the Flightplan, and updated everytime
a new taxi leg is created.

calculations. We run the FDM at 120hz and compute how many loops can fit into each FG loop.
Floating point rounding could lead to a situation where we could end up running
1, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3... loops of the FDM when in fact we want to run 2, 2, 2, 2, 2...
If we artificially inflate ml above by a tiny amount to get the
closest integer, then subtract the integer from the original
slightly smaller value, we can get a negative remainder.
Logically this should never happen, and we definitely don't want
to carry a negative remainder over to the next iteration, so
never let the remainder go below zero.

Generally you want point sprites for performance reasons when enhanced runway
lighting (and smooth points) are activated. Most hardware doesn't
accelerate the rendering of standard smooth points, so without point sprites
you will kill your night time performance if you turn on enhanced runway
lighting.
Note that enhanced runway lighting "breaks" our clever scheme to make the
runway lighting brightness vary with the relative view angle. This means
with enhanced lighting on, all lights are equally bright no matter what
direction you view them from. So perpendicular runways are just as bright
as runways you are directly lined up with (when enhanced runway lighthing
is activated.)
You can revert to the original lighting scheme by turning off enhance runway
lights, turning off distance-attenuation, and turning off point-sprites in
the rendering options menu.
maintainable. The rules are simple (extension functions are called
*with* the lock, which must be dropped before calling naCall(), which
grabs it) but the tracking of when the lock was held was getting a
little confused. Keep a "nasal call depth" count in the subsystem to
figure out whether we are making a sub-call and thus hold the lock.
- Fix a warning about class member initialization order.
- Clear up a problem with the default autopilot behavior on the back side
of an ILS in preparation for adding a real "back course" approach mode.
and "latitude-offset" should not use a precalculated value of warp.
2) Since the values of cur_time and crrGMT are identical in the current
version of the SGTime class, the calculations of the "system", "gmt", and
"latitude" are re-evaluated and updated where necessary.
I attach 2 new files and a diff file for the associated changes to add a
“fluxgate compass” to the instrument inventory. Whist this outputs
essentially the same data as /orientation/heading-magnetic-deg, it has to
be powered, and can be made to fail. I also followed Roy’s suggestion to
generate the error properties for this instrument here rather than in
xmlauto.xml.
When this instrument is included in cvs, I intend to use it in the Hunter,
A4F Seahawk and KC135. After a bit more research, it might be appropriate
for the Spitfire and Hurricane as well. AJ would also like to use it for his
Lightning model.
autopilot with the servos off. In otherwords, the computer goes through the
motions of computing the desired behavior (pitch or roll) but doesn't actually
drive the outputs. This is potentially useful when implimenting a flight
director.
and tgt_altitude -> tgt_altitude_ft. Also fix a comment in AIBase.hxx
indicating that the altitude is in meters, even though the usage throughout the
code was most definitely feet.
- In AIMultiplayer.cxx, update the altitude_ft variable so that the altitude
is reported correctly in the entity's property subtree.
- In AIMultiplayer.cxx, compute a velocity value in kts to fill in the speed
entry in the entity's property subtree. Note, this is not an earth centered
reference speed, not an indicated speed and not a speed relative to the local
airmass (that would be much harder to do.)

This patch switches to a much more sane method for ground track computation.
Thanks to tied functions, this is only executed when the node is read. This
will be done by the old & new HUD code, the latter of which won't have a
special lon/lat mode at all. Instead it will be regular labels that point
to these properties for displaying lon/lat.
I would have liked to avoid the duplication of code (lon and lat being
basically the same thing), and to avoid using static buffers and all, but
... if anyone wants to make it prettier, go ahead.
The format is controlled by /sim/lon-lat-format (will be changed if I
find a better place).
AI aircraft are out of range or the piloted aircraft has no radar system.
These computation include range, bearing, and angular offset relative to the
piloted aircraft. This gives some external script the control the behavior
of the AI aircraft relative to the piloted aircraft without requiring a radar
system, and without requiring the AI aircraft to be within radar range.
flightplan. Such aircraft are given some initial conditions that they
fly with. They proceed on in "freeflight" mode indefinitely. For example,
there is a refueling demo where the tanker starts at 3000', 280 kts, and
in a 15 degree bank, and then continues to orbit indefinitely.
For these aircraft with no flightplan, I have added several control nodes in
controls/flight that allow a script or menu or external application to set
heading, altitude, bank angle, and speed. This permits some level of interactive
or scripted control over AI aircraft.
are taken down by the C++ runtime environment. This will later be done
with runlevels. Why would we want to run nasal code in subsystem
destructors? We don't really. But some data structures may use nasal,
which are normally created/destroyed during runtime. And these will
also be destroyed at fgfs exit. In the past things like these didn't
happen, because someone had disabled all subsystem destructors ...

Make use of the attached SGMaterial reference userdata on scenegraph
leafs. Make the SGMaterial pointer available to the ground query
routines.

for which JSB had given explicit permission a while ago. I postponed that
back then, but now is the time.
color group /sim/hud/palette/color[*]/ to the active group /sim/hud/color/
if they really exist. (Parameters like <antialiased> can be set in the
active group and be left alone, or set by each <palette> color group.)
into the <color> group, but that's because on HUD color changes a whole
"color" set from /sim/hud/palette/color[*] is copied to /sim/hud/color/, and
antialiasing needs to be considered with that. (I'm not entirely happy
with the property names yet.)
there's a bug that I had copied: update() checks each list node: if it
has no children, then a listener is attached. Later, when freeing the
children list, it assumed again that each node without children would
have a listener attached. This caused a crash when a node had children
before, but lost them in the meantime. Now we tried to remove a listener
where there never was one.
with an invalid path, as in getprop("/sim/model/737") or x.getNode("f:1").
Forward sg's error message to the Nasal runtime error function instead, so
you get something like:

Unfortunately, there's no simple way to distinguish them. plib has no
user defined widget classes, and getTypeString() -- which could be used
for that -- isn't virtual. Sigh. I'll discuss the problem on the plib list.
For now I can only offer an ugly workaround. (Don't look closely!)
from plib's file-picker, where it made some sense to keep the current path as
string, and to chop off elements when leaving a dir, and adding them when
entering. But it doesn't make the least sense in SGPropertyNode space, where
we already have everything to move in a tree.

number) on the net. Only MOBIL1, MOBIL2 and MOBIL3 have been assigned TACAN
channels, but any MOBIL callsign will be able to give fuel."

creation and delete them on dialog close, but let a separate class
fgValueList handle this. The three widgets are now subclassed and the
derived widget lets fgValueList manage the lists

compatibility, but not a single dialog in fgfs uses it and did so
since ... forever. (Shoot me!)
Rationale: now that dialogs are a bit more dynamic than they used to be
(thanks to embedded Nasal), we have to delete and recreate entry lists
during dialog use. Deleting only at dialog closing doesn't cut it anymore.
Especially list widgets that are updated several times per second would
use up a lot of memory otherwise. The route-manager doesn't update that
often, but it did already leak. One TODO less. :-)

The ufo sets this to a very low value, "serious" aircraft (which don't want this
unrealistic automatism at all) set it to a very high value, and those that don't
care ... don't need to care.
signals, this is meant for attaching listeners. The ufo will use that to
hide/reveal the status line in screenshots. The following signal properties
are now available:
/sim/signals/exit ... set to 1 right before quitting
/sim/signals/reinit ... set to 1 on re-init (Shift-Esc)
/sim/signals/screenshot ... set to 1 before and to 0 after screenshot

I've got some updates for the soaring scenario that will make for a more

nobody does, anyway ;-) Now those models work (again), but have no
shadows. Those placed at runtime (e.g. via ufo) still have a shadow.
<property>, except if they are activated, in which case the user input
should, of course, not get overwritten. But if such an input was active and
the user selected a different widget, then its contents were dropped.
Fix that by setting the "DownCallback" for live input fields.
Here is one patch that to make FlightGear run without floating point
exceptions on FreeBSD. Apparently, if we do not ignore floating point
exceptions per this patch, there is some occasional condition where the
nvidia driver is involved in delivering spurious floating point exceptions
to the fgfs process, causing it to core-dump occasionally without the patch.
With only this patch, FlightGear will compile and run properly on
FreeBSD 6.X as long as the nvidia accelerated driver is installed,
modulo proper switches to the SimGear and FlightGear configure script
executions.
Again, kudos to your team for the great work on the big release
push; it is super to see things come together like this!

I had inadvertently terminated a data line when reaching a tab character after
initial data was supplied. I tested the lightning file and it now appears to
read in correctly.

(causing segfaults).
dialogs.cxx: don't set property if no list entry was chosen.
When AIFlightPlanCreateTaxi() function is called with the firstFlight
argument set to true, this is supposed to handle situations where the
the aircraft's timetable indicates it should have left between about 5 to
20 minutes earlier. In the previous version, all these aircraft started
taxiing from the first parking location available in the network, due
to the fact that the variable gateId was not assigned a value. In this
patch, route tracing starts from an assigned gate and the network node
following code is fast forwarded to a random location along the taxiways
to give a more realistic and natural distribution of taxiing aircraft
after startup.
This patch further addresses some weird ballet-dancing behavior that
aircraft were showing just prior to/right after parking and which was
related to a number of more or less duplicate waypoints in the transition
from createTaxi() to createParking() to createPushBack() to createTaxi().
Finally, a blatant typing error in the getParking() function was fixed.
at (lon, lat) coordinates -1000,0. This patch fixes the AIModels/Traffic
Manager side of things. The AIModels subsystems allowed the creation of
AIAircraft with non-existent 3D models. If such a model didn't exist, the
aip class didn't get initialized, resulting in the above-mentioned bogus
position information. Here I circumvent this problem by a) only interacting
with the tile loader if the model is visible (and hence has succesfully been
initialized) and b) by disallowing the traffic manager to create AIAircraft
objects if the path to the 3D model doesn't exist.
bunch of memory leaks that had accumulated over the years. FlightGear
doesn't currently bother to destroy and recreate a YASim context, but
at least it can do so now without worry.
groundcache addition -- the ground callback doesn't do anything at
solution time, so the ground plane was unset. Valgrind was whining
about this; it's not clear that it was actually causing a problem.
a race condition ending in warping twice and having huge increments for the
second warp.
I am not aware of such a flush function in glut. So we emulate that by
ignoring mouse move events between a warp mouse and the next frame.
That should make glut behavour aequivalent to sdl behavour.
This isn't the case if the model is destroyed on fgfs exit. To make <unload>
work under these circumstances, one would have to reorder subsystem removal,
but this doesn't seem overly useful, so we'll do it when we really need it.
aircraft models this is only called if they are loaded as AI, not if they
are the model flown by the human pilot. This has technical reasons (too
soon for Nasal/fg), but is useful to distinguish AI and non-AI use, for
example to set a different livery for AI models, or to set different
animation properties.
implement FGNasalModelData class for execution of XML <load> and <unload>
scripts. modelLoaded() is called by the model loader, and the destructor

All Nasal runs in a dialog namespace, so that variables and functions
defined in the <open> block can be used in <binding>s, etc. This is
especially useful for <radio> button handling. See "location-in-air.xml".
mf:
pthread_cancel doesn't seem to work correctly on all supported platforms.
It apparently causes SGBlockingQueue::pop() to correctly leave the thread on
the cancellation point pthread_wait(), but the SGGuard() destructor isn't
called, so the queue mutex remains locked. This triggered an assert() on
pthread_join(). This patch uses an empty ICAO request as signal for the
thread to terminate itself.
I have implemented a Honeywell MK VIII EGPWS emulation for FlightGear.
The MK VIII is an Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System aimed at
regional turboprop and small turbofan aircrafts such as the Citation,
Citation Bravo, B1900D, Beechcraft 99 and L410.

The original code selected the most preferable runway combination,
regardless of which combination was currently active. This patch
builds in some additional resistance against change, by keeping
track of which runways are already in use, and forces a change
in active runways only when new (wheather/time of day) conditions
force it to do so, resulting in much more consistent runway assignment.

It also calculates the holdback angle, and sets a Boolean value which
can be used to initiate the release of the catapult strop submodel at
the appropriate moment (new code by Vivian).
control to piston engines that allows external scripts to control the
turbo/supercharger boost programatically by setting this axis to
values in the range [0:1]. It also adds a "turbo-lag" attribute (a
time in seconds) to engines implementing turbocharger spooling delays.
This isn't terribly well tested, but doesn't seem to have broken
anything.
I am attaching a trivial patch that changes the normalization from 24 to
12 in turn_indicator.cxx. With this change, the pa24 tc has a turn
indicator spin value in the property tree of 0.9996 and the same value
for the pa28-161 is 1.0, so there is no harm to a 24 volt electrical
system in this change. Should the battery or alternator put out a lower
voltage than 12 volts, the spin value goes down and the tc shows a
negative turn that increases as the voltage gets less. This file shows
you as the author. If you are comfortable with this change, commit it
to cvs and the tc will be correct even for 12 volt systems.
propeller pitch stops for constant speed propellers. The default
values are the same as the previous hard-coded values. The new
attributes, "fine-stop" and "coarse-stop", are documented in the base
package, Docs/README.yasim.

pop() anyway, and this isn't used in the thread at all)
- don't disallow thread cancelling in the request_queue's pop(), which

This patch makes use of the vectors now available in simgear with that past
patch. And using that it simplyfies the carrier code somehow.
- Small additional factory's to the quaternion code are done in the simgear
part. Also more explicit unit names in the factory functions.
- The flightgear part makes use of them and simplyfies some computations
especially in the carrier code.
- The data part fixes the coordinate frames I used for the park positions in
the carrier to match the usual ones. I believed that I had done so, but it
was definitly different. Also there are more parking positions avaliable now.
The new multiplayer patch with an extension to transmit some properties with
the base package. The properties are transmitted in a way that will not
immediately brake the packet format if we need new ones.
Even if the maxmimum number needs to be limited somehow, that format might
work well until we have an improoved packet format which is even more compact
and that does not require to retransmit redundant information with each
packet.
That part is relatively fresh and based on that what Oliver provides on his
multiplayer server web page.
The properties are transferred to the client and I have modified the seahawks
rudder animation property to use a relative property path to verify that it
works appart from the fact that you can see it changing in the property
browser.
The movement is still a bit jerky, but that can be fixed/tuned later without
again braking the packet format.
This patch makes FlightGear at least compile on MSVC. I hope I have removed
reference of my other local changes. DSP and DSW files are included for
reference. They have been reconstructed with am2dsp.pl. I had to introduce a
change to am2dsp because of the need of filenames with embedded spaces. (Yuck)
The major direction is to remove clutter like the _USE_MATH_DEFINES and have it
on the compiler command line sice there is no central include file. You will
have to put it on the command line for your locale Project files, if it not
there, already. I added the _CRT_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE define for 2005, since it
does no harm to other VC version.
the mouse pointer to a new position. Otherwise it can happen that the new
position is first set, but then come a few still unprocessed events for the
old position. This makes ugly jumps in mouse view mode.

flying or viewing -- it can result in sudden jumps in the controls or

This patch removes some useless indirection when creating AIModels. It
obsolets AIScenario*.
AIEntities are just an intermediate copy of an other intermediate copy of an
xml file on the way from the ai scenario configuration file to the AIModels.
As such the AImodels can now be created directly from the property tree read
from the scenario file.
This reduces the amount of work needed to add an other AIModel and reduces the
amount of copy operations done during initialization.
It also moves internal knowledge of special AI models into these special AI
models class instead of spreading that into the whole AIModel subdirectory
which in turn enables to use carrier internal data structures for carrier
internal data ...
Also some unused variables are removed from the AIModel classes.
I believe that there are still more of them, but that is what I stumbled
accross ...
Tested, like the other splitouts these days in a seperate tree and using the
autopilot for some time, and in this case with a carrier start ...
problems because a lot of people already have their *real* preferences
set in ~/.fgfs/preferences.xml (and don't want fgfs to stomp over them),
because the name doesn't tell people that their data aren't save there
(comments!), and because this is inconsistent with the global preferences.xml
file, where user changes *are* respected.
This patch is a combined effort by Gregor Richards, Oliver Schroeder, and
Vivian Meazza (and code cleanups and improvements by Erik Hofman). It corrects
the bug in which a Multiplayer model responds to local inputs, and the view
number bug which caused certain aircraft to appear as cockpit only models. It
passes remote properties over the net, and all major control surfaces and gear
are now animated correctly, providing that the local ~model.xml file contains
no leading "/" in the <property></property> data entries. MP objects
are now extrapolated using 1st and 2nd derivatives to make their movement
appear more smooth. The sim is now halted while a new client joins the net.
Known problems with MP are non-display of the remote client under certain
circumstances of starting/resetting, and a freeze on starting. These bugs are
long standing, and are not addressed by this patch.
Special thanks must go to AJ Macleod for his patient testing of this patch over many evenings.
We have also moved part of multiplayer into AIModels as part of the ongoing
development of MP.

Fix the current buggy rain orientation behaviour for the views attached to the
aircraft (while still inheriting bugs with the views attached to anything else).
I had massive problems with tower.cxx, so I decided to doublecheck all
containers and iterators in order and found lot of potential problems.
Now I can fly with "debug on" of KSFO for minutes without problems.
The fix for AIMgr is from Mathias, but I reworked it. So blame me, not him.
- Feet to meter conversion mistake (in AI getGround elev)
- Improved ground following code (not yet perfect, but for now no one will
notice it within the marginal altitiude differences at the taxitrack or
runway)
- Exclusion of the "AI" directory witihin data/Aircraft in
main/init/fgSearchAircraft, to prevent AI aircraft to be picked up by the

The attached patch fixes this problem.
This patch limits the maximum simtime we do simulation computations for.
That is highly sensible if you run flightgear in valgrind or some realy slow
debug build. In such a case it is possible that flightgear gets totally
unresponsible, because simulation time might increase slower than real time.
That patch introduces a maximum simulation time per rendered frame to limit
that effect.
If the property /sim/max-simtime-per-frame is set to something strictly
positive, the simulation time is limited to that value.
The default is unchanged - no limit.
Anyway, from the point of view of gui responsiveness and responsiveness to
realtime controls like joystick inputs it might be a good idea to limit that
by default to say 1 second. If you have less than 1fps, flightgear is
unplayable anyway and I believe we do not longer need to care for realtime
correctness for that case ...
though the window wasn't resized. I'm just not adventurous enough for
a cleaner solution in the light of the upcoming release. At least the
xsize/ysize properties aren't set each frame any more, so listeners
work now properly.
Incorporating the shared ptr code:
- All scenegraph references from SimGear
- SGMaterial which already had a reference counter uses now that common
infrastructure.
- SGMatModel is now counted.
- SGSoundSample from SimGear
- And the corresponding change for the sound samples in flightgear which fixes
a latent crash if FGBeacon would evern be deleted.

This patch contains an update to net_ctrls.hxx that adds an extra 100 bytes
(or an equivalent of 25 (u)int32_t types) of reserved space. This could be
used to make the protocol forward and backward compatibel within a certain
scope. Be sure to read the instructions at the begining of the header file
when addinf new variables.
"play-audio-function" command. This function can be called from internal
code, from nasal scripts, or from external scripts to play a single one-off
wav file. File/audio data is loaded and unloaded on the fly automatically.
Create a queue of one-off wav files. Calling layer can request the system
to play any wav file. The request is thrown at the end of a play queue.
The queue is serviced sequentially so that queued wav files will no longer
overlap. When a sample is finished playing. It is removed from the queue
and deleted from memory. The next remaining request in the queue is then
played.
- Provide a Nasal interface to display simple text messages on the screen
like the ATC display. In fact, I copied the code from the ATCDisplay.cxx
and simply shifted it further down the screen.

Added a convenience function to estimate the time to intercept the selected
radial give the current heading and speed. This can be useful to a flight
directory to compute the point to switch from armed to coupled mode at just
the right time so the pilot can roll out onto the desired heading on the
desired radial.
Add a first whack at estimating a ground track heading error (difference
between aircraft heading and ground track directon.) This needs more work
and testing.

This is reviewed and OK'ed by Andy, relatively trivial and separated from
the rest of Nasal, so problems are quite unlikely and confined to users of
this function.
The callback is executed whenever the property is written to -- even if
the value didn't change. The triggering Node is available via cmdarg().

it's also possible to enable/disable menu/item entries with higher numbers.
This can be useful for adding entries from other config files (aircraft
specific or local). I'd say aircraft files can use indices starting with
[100] and local files starting with [1000]. Such high number will never
collide with an entry in menubar.xml, even if entries are added/removed
there.
Display the ground intersection point on mouse click (if click not consumed
by the gui or the panel.) This should eventually get stuffed into the
property tree.
Computes the pick direction and starting point. This is code that translates
a screen coordinate into a vector in the FlightGear world (between the eye and
the on-screen coordinate.) Armed with this vector in FG world coordinates,
you could call a scenery intersection routine and lookup the lon/lat/elev of
the point in the world that was clicked on.

Unfortunately, we don't have an easy way to access the puObjects
only by knowing the respective XML property node, because the
menu structure was built by plib from string lists. That's why
we walk the puMenuBar tree and store {property node}->{puObject*}
pairs in a map. With this infrastructure in place we can now
easily enable/disable entries, but we can also make other changes
to menu buttons as we see need. The structure of puMenuBar is
described in the pui documentation, so it's less of a hack than
it looks. :-)
remove a hack and do it properly: if the requested elevation is for some
reason below the surface and the intersection test fails (as it appears
to be the case in EGLL), try again from 10000m ASL

to the scenery until a terrain tile was found: In this case read the
rest of that group (i.e. the Objects/ twin dir) and then stop scanning.
Better structuring of log messages & fix warnings.
sea tile, and finally process the objects. This guarantees that all objects
are placed relative to a valid tile center, rather than to the origin (0/0/0).
This is important for objects in sea tiles, and allows to display objects
of *.stg files that came sooner in FG_SCENERY.
This was the reason why some people (especially SuSE10.0/gcc 4.0.2
users) couldn't see others in MP. I don't even know why I'm committing
that. It's less important than taxi lights ...
metar fetcher. Effectively this caused the metar thread and the main
thread to both attempt to fetch weather data. This could lead to long pauses
when the main thread decided to fetch the weather, and introduced a race
condition that could cause a segfault/crash.
Investigating this issue, I discovered that even longer ago, someone confused
#defines and #ifdef symbols with C/C++ variables. If I #define XYZ 0 it is
defined so #ifdef XYZ is true, not false like a variable. Our thread
detection made this mistake and there were follow up patches to work around
it.
So I fixed the configure script (ahhh, reading the autoconf manual is highly
recommended excercise for people editing the configure.ac file.) I also
discovered that we were hardwiring with_threads=yes with no way via configure
options to disable threads from the build so I fixed that.
Then I patched up the #ifdef's scattered through the code to match the
configure script changes, oh and by the way, I stumbled upon a past typo
that led to the race condition in the metar fetching thread and fixed that.
Here's a fix for a bug I introduced when I updated the AIStorm with
turbulence. The change I made to the FGAIEntity struct was overriding the
thermal <strength-fps> data.
too old (wrong system time or broken proxy): stops after 10 stale reports
were fetched in a row. This should simply stop further fetching, but due
to a bug in the threading system(?) it does currently lead to abortion,
just like any other exception in the fetcher.
each other out. The problem is this: if we press, for example, "Ctrl-a", but
release the "Ctrl" modifier button *before* the "a" button (which nobody does
intentionally, but which happens all the time), then we don't get the RELEASE
signal on "Ctrl-a" (keycode 1), but on the "a" (79). But "a" hasn't been
pressed, so the signal is dropped. And who releases "Ctrl-a"? Nobody!
So the next PRESSED signal for "Ctrl-a" is ignored, too. It is still
"pressed" after all, isn't it? That's the reason for the occasional
non-functioning of keys.
Due to the nearing 0.9.9 release, I only commit a crude last-minute fix.
It's not as intrusive as it looks, and shouldn't be "dangerous" at all.
It only makes sure that when we get an unexpected RELEASE for one letter
key ("a") that the two twins "A" and "Ctrl-A" are released if they are
still in "pressed" state.
The proper fix will be to let fg_os{,_sdl}.cxx always report presses on the
same key ("a", "Shift-a", "Ctrl-a", "Alt-a", and other combinations of
modifiers) as the *same* key (97), only with modifiers appropriately set.

found the problem while looking at 360 degree lift curve graphs
looking for discontinuities.

The problem was with the "real time" queue in the event manager,
causing the third argument of Nasal's settimer() (a flag for "sim
time") to be ignored. Inverts the default sense of the argument, as
there are lots of uses of settimer() in the current code, almost none
of which want to use real time.
Note this fix introduces a header file incompatibility in SimGear --
be sure to update.

This change makes sure that Nasal-generated and dynamic dialogs can be
re-opened correctly when cycling through themes.
Take any arbitrary vector (not necessarily vertical) and intersect it with
the current set of loaded terrain tiles. Returns lon, lat, elev. This
could have a multitude of useful applications such as testing line of sight
between two objects, faking a terrain following lookahead radar system,
virtual georeferencing, etc.
because this creates an empty entry if it didn't exist. This made the
activation of the dialog mandatory before the next gui subsystem update()
happened. Otherwise fgfs segfaulted.
right/upper screen edge (analogous to the --geometry spec), assuming
that we never want to draw outside the screen area; for this to work

I found that all the current users of the companion
function, findByFreq() actually did assume radians despite the misleading
comment in the .hxx and .cxx saying it's degrees. I've fixed the
comment now, and no longer change the Navaids code. The new Navaids user
in NewWaypoint() is now passing radians to the findByIdent().
Note that along with fixing the comments in the navlist.hxx, I removed
an obsolete method findByLoc() declaration (there is no definition
anywhere).
CygWin/gcc-3.4.4 updates.
I replaced my cygwin compiler with 3.4.4, did a make clean of plib, simgear,
and flightgear, then did a make install of all three. With the included changes,
everything builds fine, and runs fine.

dynamically generated/modified dialogs. Parts in the XML file can be
hidden and turned on by the C++ code. Other hidden parts can be used
as templates that are multiply used. Hidden datablocks can contain
strings that are used in dialog context, that are easier to translate
or modify in the XML file.
Attached is a patch to add oil temperature to the YASim piston engine
model. This brings to life one of the pa28-161's otherwise 'dead'
guages. It's a pretty simple 'model' based on temperatures and warmup
times I've observed in the labs on auto engines and run through my
dodgy-memory filter. It does the job of populating the guage with
something plausible though.

in a multiengine aircraft. The highest rpm engine takes priority for driving
the vacuum system.
I had a quick view over the ssgBase::ref() calls in flightgear.
I made them all symmetric and used ssgDeRefDelete to dereference them.
This has the basic advantage that ssgDeRefDelete additionaly deletes the
memory instead of just decrementing the reference cound without deletion ...
This includes an incorrect deref instead of a ssgDeRefDelete in the placement
transform registration I introduced earlier. I believe that this causes the
problems with long flights (unverified, but with a big propability).

I stumbled across two memory errors with two wrong const references to
std::string.
As I fixed that, I also moved aircraft_dir which is only used from UIUC into
UIUC. With that uiuc_aircraftdir.h is empty and can be removed.
I believe I have found the agl hud problems as well as the 'hole' in the
carrier's deck. I spent half the day to reproduce that problem, it did not
occure when you start on the carrier not does it occure with JSBSim and my
really often used testaircraft. So I really need to improove my helicopter
flying qualities.
I was under the impression that *all* FDM's call
FGInterface::updateGeo*Position(..)
so set the new position in the FDM interface. Therefore I had added at the
some code that updates the scenery elevation below the aircraft to *those*
functions.
Ok, not all FDM's do so :/
The attached patch factors out a function computing the scenery altitude at
the current FDM's position. This function is also used in those FDM's which
need to update this value themselves.
Also this patch restores the nearplane setting and uses the current views
altitude instead of the current aircrafts. I think that this should further
be changed to the eypoint's agl in the future.
The agl is again ok in YASim's hud.

This adds a TACAN instrument to the inventory. Range and bearing are calculated
to the TACAN or VORTAC beacon selected by means of the Channel Selector in the E
quipment/Radio pull-down menu.
A TACAN beacon has also been added to the aircraft carrier Nimitz (channel #029Y
).
I've prepared a patch as suggested by Hans-Georg Wunder and Jeff McBride.
In addition I've removed the ability to completely leave out the integral
action by setting Ti to zero. The velocity form of the PID algorithm _needs_
the integral action.
Attached is a patch to the airport data storage that I would like committed
after review if acceptable. Currently the storage of airports mapped by ID
is by locally created objects - about 12 Meg or so created on the stack if
I am not mistaken. I've changed this to creating the airports on the heap,
and storing pointers to them - see FGAirportList.add(...) in
src/Airports/simple.cxx. I believe that this is probably better practice,
and it's certainly cured some strange problems I was seeing when accessing
the airport data with some gps unit code. Changes resulting from this have
cascaded through a few files which access the data - 11 files are modified
in all. Melchior and Durk - you might want to test this and shout if there
are problems since the metar and traffic code are probably the biggest
users of the airport data. I've also added a fuzzy search function that
returns the next matching airport code in ASCII sequence in order to
support gps units that have autocompletion of partially entered codes.
More generally, the simple airport class seems to have grown a lot with the
fairly recent addition of the parking, runway preference and schedule time
code. It is no longer just an encapsulation of the global airport data
file, and has grown to 552 bytes in size when unpopulated (about 1/2 a K!).
My personal opinion is that we should look to just store the basic data in
apt.dat for all global airports in a simple airport class, plus globally
needed data (metar available?), and then have the traffic, AI and ATC
subsystems create more advanced airports for themselves as needed in the
area of interest. Once a significant number of airports worldwide have
ground networks and parking defined, it will be impractical and unnecessary
to store them all in memory. That's just a thought for the future though.
I have prepared a new patch for multiplayer, which fixes endianess issues with
multiplayer code. It's basically identical to the patch I sent before my
vacation, but contains minor fixes.
Multiplayer should now be working under all unix-like environments and windows
native. The basic trick is to let configure check for endianess of the host
system.
It will not work on system not using configure in the build process (excluding
windows), ie. possibly MACOS. For those system we should provide #ifdefs in
tiny_xdr.hpp.

That way we average over the number of samples as configured.
There was a patch from Manuel Masing a few months ago which cleaned up
SGLocation's way depending on input values. That means that with that patch
SGLocation does no longer have calls with unneeded input arguments.
I took his patch and integrated that into flightgear and made maximum use of
that changes.

Some quite extensive changes to the AIModel code:
1. Mathias has made major changes to the AICarrier code to provide better
alignment of an aircraft on deck with the carrier - this feature is a major
improvement on the existing, but has a bug which might cause it to fail when
the computer carries out other tasks - changing window size is a known
example. This bug is outwith this code.
2. I have made significant changes to the AIShip code to enable a ship the
turn and roll smoothly.
3. I have added some simple AI which enables the carrier to remain within,
or return to, an operating box.
4. An automated turn into wind for flying operations.
5. A simplistic implementation of TACAN within AICarrier. I am in the course
of implementing this as a generic instrument, but this is some time off
completion.
I have prepared a patch that:
- Introduces a FGTileMgr::scenery_available method which asks the tilemanager
if scenery for a given range around a lat/lon pair is already loaded and make
use of that method at some -9999 meter checks.
- Introduces a FGScenery::get_elevation_m method which queries the altitude at
a given position. In constrast to the groundcache functions this is the best
choice if you ask for one *single* altitude value. Make use of that thing in
AI/ATC classes and for the current views ground level. At the current views
part the groundcache is reused if possible.
- The computation of the 'current groundlevel' is no longer done on the
tilemanagers update since the required functions are now better seperated.
Alltogether it eliminates somehow redundant terrain level computations which
are now superseeded by that more finegrained functions and the existence of
the groundcache. Additionally it introduces an api to commonly required
functions which was very complex to do prevously.
- automatic detection of axis directionality, so that axis inputs are appropriately inverted only when necessary
- fixed trim axis names for better understandability
- fixed signs for flaps up/down property increments
- button 0 was previously used for skipping axes and buttons in both loops. Now button 0 can be assigned a binding (e.g., brakes). Instead, moving any axis during the button-assignment-loop indicates skipping.
- The user is now told how to skip a control.
I did some profiling of the code and found a few interessant things. Some corrections are obvious like the one in the multiplayer code, the fps is no more divided by 2 or 3 when another plane is on screen.
Other things like collision detection and computation of agl can not really be optimized. I changed a few things in hitlist.cxx but this only give a very low increase of fps. The groundcache eats a lot of cpu but I think that the real way to do it is to use a real collision system like OPCODE or something like that.
And I added an option to disable the recording of replay data. It takes more cpu than we can think.

I have now included a patch to the multiplyer protocoll which does:
1. place the 3d model into the scenery using a placement transform which can
dynamically change its scenry center.
2. Transmits unique position and orientation data for the 3d model.
3. Thus breaks protocol compatibility.

But this patch again fixes only symtoms, not the problems. I suggest to
put it into cvs anyway, as it will enable the majority to get experience
with the multiplayer mode.
Turns out to be a bad interaction between jsbsims crash detection and my
past initialization changes.
The attached patch fixes this by moving crash detection out of the
initialization phase of jsbsim.

texture where it should not. A transparent texture in the plib context is a texture
with an alpha channel or a material with alpha <= 0.99.

Somehow the MIPSpro compiler doesn't like an STL map entry being called
using a variable when the reference is an object and not a pointer to an
object.
Preliminary support for a fontcache is added which prevents fonts from
being loaded more than once and takes care of freeing them up again.
The fontcache isn't used yet since there seems to be a problem somewhere.
I have traced that reset on carrier problem down to several problems. One of
them is the fact that on reset the carrier is updated while the aircraft is
not. That made the aircraft drop down an elevator sometimes. Depending on the
passed realtime while loading some parts of the scenery.
LayoutWidget::setDefaultFont() wants puFont* /and/ pointsize as extra
parameters, when puFont knows its pointsize anyway. Didn't want to change
that yet, though.) Now the HELVETICA_10 font makes actually sense. :-)
font similar to Helvetica/Swiss. The license doesn't allow to redistribute
modified fonts under the original name. While it's only a converted font,
and not manually modified, it can no longer be seen as original. Changes
so far are (a) conversion from vector to bitmap, (b) different empty space
width, (c) different & constant gap value, without other kerning information.
Further changes may be necessary in the future.
[new_gui is] "using copies of puFont objects that are not yet initialized, I
think that dependant of link order (and so tor execution order) it can
work or not. Changing puFont font by puFont *font should work in all cases."
hardcodes the text color as black, which makes them a bit hard to read
on dark backgrounds; fix sent to the plib list; (the added code isn't
pretty and hence fits the existing style quite well ;-)

With that patch you will have a --carrrier=id argument where id can either be
the pennant number configured in the nimitz scenario or the carriers name
also configured in the carriers scenario.
Additionaly you can use --parkpos=id to select different positions on the
carrier. They are also configured in the scenario file.
That includes the switch of the whole FGInterface class to make use of the
groundcache.
That means that an aircraft no longer uses the current elevation value from
the scenery class. It rather has its own local cache of the aircrafts
environment which is setup in the common_init method of FGInterface and
updated either manually by calling
FGInterface::get_groundlevel_m(lat, lon, alt_m);
or implicitly by calling the above method in the
FGInterface::_updateGeo*Position(lat, lon, alt);
methods.
A call get_groundlevel_m rebuilds the groundcache if the request is outside
the range of the cache.
Note that for the real usage of the groundcache including the correct
information about the movement of objects and the velocity information, you
still need to set up the groundcache in the usual way like YASim and JSBSim
currently does.
If you use the native interface, you will get only static objects correctly.
But for FDM's only using one single ground level for a whole step this is IMO
sufficient.
The AIManager gets a way to return the location of a object which is placed
wrt an AI Object. At the moment it only honours AICarriers for that.
That method is a static one, which loads the scenario file for that reason and
throws it away afterwards. This looked like the aprioriate way, because the
AIManager is initialized much later in flightgears bootstrap, and I did not
find an easy way to reorder that for my needs. Since this additional load is
very small and does only happen if such a relative location is required, I
think that this is ok.
Note that moving on the carrier will only work correctly for JSBSim and YASim,
but you should now be able to start and move on every not itself moving
object with any FDM.

The rules do currently need a dummy child for the layouter to work correctly,
(<hrule><foo/></hrule>). The goal is to make a simple <hrule/> work.

actually never executed -- always only "released". And that is why
the <repeatable> property didn't work. And *that* was the reason
why the Spitfire's starter didn't work with freeglut, and Vivian

Annexed an IVSI (instantaneous ertical speed indicator), which bypasses a
limitation with Concorde :
- the cruise at Mach 2 must be with a slow climb rate of 50/60 ft/min
(2h from 50000 ft).
- with /velocities/vertical-speed-fpm, the real climb rate (altimeter) varies :
One must constantly (every 5-10 minutes) change the vertical speed hold of
the autopilot between 10 ft/min and 200 ft/min.
This is very annoying because not a constant offset : that could be a lack of
sensitivity of /velocities/vertical-speed-fpm (FDM ?).
This new IVSI :
- Is an emulation with works with environment pressure : a real IVSI works with
static pressure (with lag) + accelerometers.
It is not forbidden to later upgrade to the real model.
- Doesn't require a tuning of the autopilot made with
/velocities/vertical-speed-fpm (also tested with 737, 747) :
Concorde's autoland works without update.
block (this required to move most of init() into postinit())
- undo the "which" pseudo-namespace workaround, and do it proper:
- let all nasal code in a joystick config file be executed in its own
namespace. This allows to define functions in the init block that
can be used throughout the driver file, and to write state variables
in one binding, while reading them in other bindings, all without
having to make sure that the values aren't lost in between, or collide
with another joystick driver's code.
For this the input subsystem creates a namespace for each joystick:
"__js0" for joystick 0, etc. The two leading underscores are there to
avoid collisions with user defined modules (similar to internal compiler
variables). The namespace shouldn't be used explicitly, at least not in
releases, and not from outside code, except for testing purposes, for
which it can be useful. (If using the Cyborg joystick as js[0], you
can read the modifier level as "__js0.modifier" from any nasal context.)
- make it public
- enable handleCommand() to execute a binding (or other nasal code defined
in a property system subtree) in a particular namespace (-> "module" child)
These changes represent some attempts to bandaid and patch a hopelessly
flawed system to impliment basic battery charging/discharging as well as
provide the ability to model ammeter gauges and draw current from multiple
sources (like load balancing multiple alternators in a multi-engine aircraft.)
The system design forces all these things to be horrible hacks or depend
on extremely subtle system side effects and call ordering so they may or9
may not work to one degree or another.
As mentioned in the mailing list, my recommendation is to move away from
using this system and instead build a procedural electrical system using
nasal. Sometime in the future we hopefully can impliment a better conceived
data driven electrical system model.
to the joystick index (x in /input/joysticks/js[x]) both when initializing
nasal init blocks & whenever updating the joystick. That's the only way to
make these nasal contexts aware of the joytick for which they were called.
And that's useful if a js maintains common variables, such as modifiers or
state variables, that should be shared between the namespace-less bindings
and initialization code. And, yes, it's over-engineered ... :-)
its own data, and can distinguish itself from other instances of the
same js driver. This property is removed after script execution.

I added an AIStatic object to my OV-10 sim for use in putting city signs,
vehicles, or anything else that will be static, but that I don't want to put
in the scenery files. It's inexpensive. Before, I was making such things
from AIShip.
I also added the ability to set flight plans to repeat, so that when an
airplane reaches the end it just starts over at the beginning. This is
useful for my OV-10 sim. I have C-141 and KC-135 traffic flying approaches
to Ramstein, and I only have to define two AI objects to do this.
Also, I found an inefficiency in AIBase, where every AI object was calculating
Mach number at every dt. Now only AIBallistic objects do this.
this is basically the past patch I sent to the list and which should now
really (...!?!?) fix the no ground below aircraft problem.
Reasons:
I understood my remaining thinko I introduced with the prevous patch, and the
same thinko I made in my test cases.
The feedback from the list told me that it should help.

I made YASim query the the ground cache at the wrong place. This one fixed
this, one can now land the bo105 on top of the oracle buildings :)

Is a followup of the scenery center update code: Register the scenery center
transform at the time it is put into the scene graph not at creation time.

I held that part back from the past hitlist patch, because I hoped that it
will be sufficient (and the last one was in fact the biggest part) without.
As some test cases from Melchior showed me, it is not. We have additionally
to the wrong computed transform from the prevous patch some roundoff
problems. This patch adds some small tolerance to for the point in triangle
test.
... may be one even needs to increase the eps value further if starting at
some tile boundaries still fails.

That is a big chunk.
Tested now for two days while hunting the second patch :) .
That is a partial rewrite of the groundcache to use its own datastructures for
that flat scenegraph in the cache. The basic advantage is, what Erik
suggested, to precompute some often used values of these triangles. Also
allmost all computations are now in double precision which should decrease
(hopefully fix), together with a similar tolerance for some point in triangle
tests, the problems with 'no ground below aircraft'.
I am playing with octrees for the groundcache, that will finally solve the
performance problem when high triangular count models end up in the
groundcache. This patch is also some prework for those octrees ...
It happens regularly during normal operation (ufo!) and only informs about
unfortunate, but known and deliberate behavior. The user can't do anything
about it, anyway. And finally: flooding the console with this message does
only *add* to fgfs' sluggish performance and makes every other message
go unnoticed.

1) The AIStorm sets the properties:
/environment/turbulence/magnitude-norm
/environment/turbulence/rate-hz
The actual turbulence effects are handled by the FDM.
If the effects are deemed unrealistic, then that will
have to be fixed in the FDM(s).
2) The zone of turbulence is cylindrical, and is centered
at the AIStorm's lat/lon. The diameter is set with
<diameter-ft>, the top with <height-msl>, the bottom is
assumed to be at <altitude> minus 1000 feet.
3) Note that the zone of turbulence may not match well with
the visual model of the storm. In this case I had to
x-offset the storm model by 4700 meters to match the zone
of turbulence. (i.e. the storm model is 4700m off center).
4) While I was in there I also increased the speed of the
lightning flashes to look more realistic.
This is another update for the cloud code, a lot of lines but this time I have started to add the doxygen doc.

in terms of predictable packing and byte ordering. So rather than trying to
get fancy and shave a few bits off the structure sizes, just go with 32 bit
ints for everthing which saves a lot of potential headaches in the cross
platform and cross architecture arenas.
I have done a patch to eliminate the jitter of 3D-objects near the viewpoint
(for example 3D cockpit objects).
The problem is the roundoff accuracy of the float values used in the
scenegraph together with the transforms of the eyepoint relative to the
scenery center.
The solution will be to move the scenery center near the view point.
This way floats relative accuracy is enough to show a stable picture.
To get that right I have introduced a transform node for the scenegraph which
is responsible for that shift and uses double values as long as possible.
The scenery subsystem now has a list of all those transforms required to place
objects in the world and will tell all those transforms that the scenery
center has changed when the set_scenery_center() of the scenery subsystem is
called.
The problem was not solvable by SGModelPlacement and SGLocation, since not all
objects, especially the scenery, are placed using these classes.
The first approach was to have the scenery center exactly at the eyepoint.
This works well for the cockpit.
But then the ground jitters a bit below the aircraft. With our default views
you can't see that, but that F-18 has a camera view below the left engine
intake with the nose gear and the ground in its field of view, here I could
see that.
Having the scenery center constant will still have this roundoff problems, but
like it is now too, the roundoff error here is exactly the same in each
frame, so you will not notice any jitter.
The real solution is now to keep the scenery center constant as long as it is
in a ball of 30m radius around the view point. If the scenery center is
outside this ball, just put it at the view point.
As a sideeffect of now beeing able to switch the scenery center in the whole
scenegraph with one function call, I was able to remove a one half of a
problem when switching views, where the scenery center was far off for one or
two frames past switching from one view to the next. Also included is a fix
to the other half of this problem, where the view position was not yet copied
into a view when it is switched (at least under glut). This was responsible
for the 'Error: ...' messages of the cloud subsystem when views were
switched.
was probably my idea of a feature, but if the input buffer actually
does has a length of zero (as Melchior discovered for the case of a
zero-length .nas file) then there will be no null.

I have some small updates to the ground cache.
- Remove the usage of dynamic_cast where it is known that the result will be
non null.
- Renormalize the surface normal in double precision.
- Place the groundcaches center at the point it was requested not at the
scenery center. This fixes the problems with JSBSim's trimming together with
the ground cache. Now I am ready to commit JSBSim's ground cache usage.
I'm looking through the AI code, trying to find the bug that's killing the
thermals. The following things don't look right:
1) AIManager::101 , the Traffic Manager pointer is searched for by name at
every dt. I'll leave this for you to look at.
2) AIManager::295 , the thermal height is not being set. We need to
restore the line: ai_thermal->setHeight(entity->height_msl);
This fixes the thermal problem.
3) AIManager::328 , I changed the fetching of the user state to occur every
sim cycle, and changed the fetching function from by-name lookup to a lookup
by node pointer. It should be faster now, and more accurate too. This helps
the air-refueling.
have a "property" mode as well as the original "binary" mode. The property mode
will allow the remote module to request any set of properties, and it will send
those properties each frame. The remote module can reply with a list of arbitrary
property name/value pairs to update on the FlightGear side.
This is a first stab, so it's not the cleanest, most well concieved code, but it
allows an external module (communicating via a pipe) to have a huge amount of
flexibility in the data in can access and update.
Make SDL window resizable; This exposes the same problem that many
GLUT users have: resizing up may cause a temporary switch to software
rendering if the card is low on memory. Resizing down again switches
back to HW rendering. (KSFO is texture intensive, but there are no
problems in LOWL, and elsewhere.) Less and less users will have the
problem as cards become better, and it's no reason not to allow
resizing altogether.
_course_deg is first initialized in the if()-branch (gps.cxx:419). But
this branch isn't entered at first run if wp0==wp1, so that in line 615
fgfs tries to SG_NORMALIZE_RANGE() a random value, which can take a
long while if the number huge. This was occasionally a number greater
than 10160!
- initialize all vars before they are used (fixes endless loop)
- fix some compiler warnings (initialization order, unused vars)
FGAIMgr::GenerateSimpleAirportTraffic() tries to determine the airport's local
hour from the /sim/time/gmt-time string, which fails, because at this time the
property is still empty. That's why I don't get ATIS at LOWG (where it is *not*
midnight right now. :-) -> use sg's get_cur_time() instead
- don't treat *every* child in the xml as submodel, especially not a "param"
block
- do not only *enable* the contrail flag above some altitude, but also
disable it below
showDialog() is careful not to create a new FGDialog() if a dialog with the
same name is already open (active). But at this point it is already too late:
newDialog(), which was called shortly before, has already overwritten the
dialog properties. This leads to animated garbage in the best case, and a
segfault in format_callback() in the worst case.
- GUI::newDialog(): Don't you overwrite properties of an active dialog!
- GUI::readDir(): You may do that, but delete the old dialog first!
(necessary for reloading the GUI)
- FGDialog::makeObject(): only set format_callback() with setRenderCallback()
if the property is "live". Otherwise, only call it once at construction
time. This isn't only a performance improvement. Without this the label
was growing until it hit the limit (256).
The previous message wasn't totally correct. Strings are now allowed, too. And
the pattern is now '[ -+#]?\d*(\.\d*)?l?[fs]' and *may* be embedded in a string.
There may only be one %s or %f, though. %% is allowed in the preamble/postamble.
(Yes, %ls is allowed, too, and treated as %s.)
Also, "end" is superfluous now.
Printing floats in dialogs with 8 digits after the comma is inappropriate
for most cases.
- implement a "format" property for "text" gui elements (a.k.a. pui label).
Number formats are set by strtod/snprintf, while formats on non-numbers
are replaced by "%s". Practical example in the upcoming material.nas update.
Valid formats regex: '%[ -]?\d*(\.\d*)?l?f' (IOW: the format must begin
with '%' and end with 'f').

The dialog handling has been written at a time when only one dialog was
shown at the same time, and dialogs were shallow -- with only children, but
no grand-children. This makes finding a draggable spot on modern, dialogs
with nested objects quite a challenge. The patches fixes this, and other things:
- check full object tree on button press, not only the outmost layer;
and don't give up just because we are in *something* (which could well be
something harmless, like a group); only ignore a few, sensible objects
(we don't want to drag after a click on a button or into an input field)
- don't lose dialogs as easily when dragging too fast (it does still happen
if one manages to enter an editable field while dragging, but this is
a plib problem and I don't feel like fixing that now :-)
- don't "live"-update input fields while they are in edit mode
- remove some "if (foo) delete foo;" redundancy
popping up and crashing when the B-29 model is in use. This isn't the
right solution; we should fine the NaN condition. But it's harmless
and allows development with the B-29 to continue.
back, but forgot to put the same fix into the runtime code. Also
added some comments so I don't get confused again the next time I come
through here. :)
I have done some cleanup where I moved some values out of classes where they
do not belong and such stuff.
Also the fols offsets are now named in the carrier xml file with a more
verbose name (flols-pos/offset-*) than before (only offset-*).
There is a little preparation for definitions of parking positions on the
carrier which should later be used for starting flightgear directly on the
carrier.
a safe undersleep() to conserve cpu. Essentially we undersleep our target by
just a bit (to avoid the chance of oversleeping.) Then we finish off the
remaining time slice with a busy-wait loop.

I implemented the method pointed out by Norman. It works great on windows and saves me a lot of CPU cycles. This way, I can get the same framerate in moderately populated areas and have CPU idle 50% of the time instead of wildly looping in the NVidia driver while waiting to sync on vblank.
It has been tested on Linux by Melchior. He saw the same gain in CPU cycles.
I have added a --aspect-ratio-multiplier=x.xx option to give some end user
control over the aspect ratio. (This may seem a little strange, but it's a
building block towards the capability of doing asymmetric view frustums in
FlightGear.)
ssgSetNearFar(). This by default creates a symmetric view frustum which is
typically what an application wants.
However, to get control of the view frustum in order to build support for
asymmetric view frustums, we need to wrap these calls with a bit of our own
logic.
This set of changes wraps all calls to ssgSetFOV() and ssgSetNearFar() with
FGRenderer methods.
I also standardized how the FGRenderer class is handled in globals.[ch]xx.
This led to some cascading changes in a variety of source files.
As I was working my way through the changes, I fixed a few warnings along
the way.
I attach the long-promised improved version of the USS Nimitz.
It includes an improved version of the FLOLS, which requires the attached
diff to be applied to AICarrier.cxx and AICArrier.hxx.
I've made lots of eye-candy in the form or the flightdeck crew.
Unfortunately, it about doubles the size of the tarball. I'll send it to you
later; when I've figured out some way of only loading on request (any advice
would be very welcome).
I could provide a \u2018bare\u2019 version to cut down on the vertex count for
less capable systems however, the count isn\u2019t huge in the first place.
I've cut the textures down as far as I can without losing definition.
I just heard from John Wojnaroski that you and he are going to work on getting
a flightgear demo machine up for the linux expo thursday and Friday. John
indicated that he would very much like to get a CVS version with the new
traffic code up and running before the expo.
I've added some features to the PID controller:
Ability to set desired sampling interval in seconds. Use <Ts> under <config>
to set the desired sampling interval of the PID controller.
Example:

I have made the
'Select Airport from List' option in FlightGear work
(I think) properly. I have some concerns about the
solution, which could be broken by changes to plib (if
they re-use the value I have assigned to
PUCLASS_LIST), but for the moment it seems to work OK.

A request has been sent to John Fay to include the puList
code in the puAux subdirectory of plib so expect some
changes for future version of FlightGear.
RE: --aircraft=ufo in system.fgfsrc is ignored
To change a 'feature', one that has been mentioned here many
times, and again recently, place the following code block
into fgInitFGAircraft.
In its favour, I would argue this means FG can be run without
a command line, provided FG_ROOT has been set in the
environment, and that seems to me, as it should be ... ;=))
Perhaps the only counter, is that system.fgfsrc is read twice,
but so are others, like .fgfsrc, for other (local) options ...
or system.fgfsrc should .nt. be used for 'aircraft' ?
Here's again one of the more obscure bugs that valgrind complains about: somehow
the STL container classes manage to read out values before they were ever set.
This patch fixes that. This may not cause any harm in this case, but valgrind
seems to *always* be right about them.
The following patches to SimGear & FlightGear ...
- create an FGMetar abstraction layer, whose purpose is:
* provide defaults for unset values
* interpolate/randomize data (GREATER_THAN)
* derive additional values (time, age, snow cover)
* consider minimum identifier (CAVOK, mil. color codes)
- add rain/hail/snow/snowcover support on the METAR side
- add max age of METAR data handling (currently set to
- add support for an external METAR cache proxy server
- add CAVOK handling
- set missing year/month in regular METAR messages
- fix a small bug in metar.cxx (wrong return value)
rather than /instrumentation/comm ... we need to be a little careful here
because typically, a single knob controls power to both matched com/nav pairs.

wires or catapults when the ac3d model is loaded without the crease patch
(caused by the much more unstructured scene graph emitted by the old loader).
It should also emit more warnings if the carrier hardware configuration
includes conflicting definitions.
That code is the most intrusive one, it should not be used until you configure
an aircraft carrier as a aimodel. So I think it should be save to apply that
before the release too.
Attached is a patched runways.cxx. This fixes the find runway nearest to a given heading code. This was returning the last runway loaded at a given airport, not the nearest runway to the heading requested (which seems to always be 270deg by default). I have no idea how this has survived unnoticed for so long - I think it might be because you need to start at an airport with a runway near to 27 and one much greater than 27 eg. 36 to really tickle it, otherwise the runway nearest to 27 tends to be the final one loaded anyway. Try starting at KARR with and without the patch and note the surface wind. This should go in before the release.
a single apt.dat.gz file which is in the native X-Plane format.
To do this I wrote a front end loader than builds the airport and runway
list. Some of the changes I needed to make had a cascading effect, so there
are minor naming changes scattered throughout the code.
I have a small update which fixes the algorythm used for marking solid
surfaces for some cases where some branch nodes carry the object names I had
expected in the leaf nodes.
That will also introduce the possibility to mark whole subtrees from the
scenegraph solid.
I still work on getting the YASim models see the detailed environment
especially the carrier.
I have *forgotten* to initialize and to destruct the ground cache object!

The attached patch allows to put comments in *.stg files[1]. Lines with
# in the first column (and only there!) are skipped. This has no effect
on overall performance, but has two advantages:
A) possibility to temporarily comment out objects during scenery design,
(or to put other remarks there);
B) possibility to put marks like "# BEGIN" and "# END" there that allow
automated merging of local landmarks etc.

I've finished the emigration of the radiostack, and I've also removed it
completely. It turned out that the comm radio is completely implemented in
the ATC subsystem. I've changed the affected ATC files to point
to /instrumentation/com, but I guess that the maintainer of the ATC code
should decide wether to make it configureable, and how.
I also had to change some files in Network and Main. The changes in network
should be obvious, but the changes in Main were a bit suspect. The files
included radiostack.hxx, but they weren't directly depending on
radiostack-hxx. They were depending on other files that were included by
radiostack.hxx. I got it to compile, but I'm not sure if I included the
correct directly depending file.
For the data directory I changed every occurrence of /radios/
with /instrumentation/ with this simple one-liner that I found on the net:

Instead of me sending all the files that got changed by this I suggest that
you execute the one-liner yourself. Of course I can not guarantee that this
will work perfectly, but I considered hand editing to be not an option (I'm
lazy). I don't want to test every aircraft to see if everything still works,
I think it's better to wait and see if anyone complaints about broken nav
radios/instruments.
This is a sub-system which can be added to any carrier.
These files add a functioning Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System (FLOLS).
The orange/red 'source' lights are illuminated according to the position of
the pilot's eye above/below the 3.5 deg glide slope. The apparent position
of the source light relative to the fixed green datum lights allow the pilot
to 'fly the meatball'. The green 'cut' lights flash when the pilot's eye is
below the coverage of the lowest (red) source light.
TODO - add rules for the operation of the wave-off lights.
I understand that the new hud/runway feature is still very experimental,
and that the search criteria for the active runway don't necessarily make
much sense. (We are searching for a runway on /sim/presets/airport-id
that matches the current wind direction best, and not the tuned in ILS
runway or something!)
Anyway: the new hud code completely denies the possibility of
globals->get_runways()->search() not finding a runway and returning false.
There's always a runway found at KSFO, but not so at e.g. LOXL, in which
case we are handing garbage over to sg_geodesy.cxx and find ourselves
caught in an endless loop in geo_direct_wgs_84().
Okay, here's the latest update to the tarffic manager/AI Manager. AITraffic
can now fly multiple routes and be initialized while sitting statically at
airports.
currently just returns a lagged normalized value in the range of 0-1 that
is proportional to N1. It's up to the engine gauge to scale to the right
range. This is for lack of a real model of these items so we can have
something to drive the engine gauges.
I have now split out the ground cache functions into src/FDM/groundcache.[ch]xx
Attached are the two files and the patch to integrate that cache into
FGInterface.
The code is nowhere used at the moment, the fdm's need to be updated to use
that ground cache. The JSBSim-dropin.tar.gz from Martins ftp server does this
for example.
The carrier's scenegraph is not yet processed to be visible for ground
intersection testing. So the only benefit up to now is that the api is set
up. Using this I can put the changes to make JSBSim work with that into
JSBSim's cvs. Also I aim to provide Andy a patch to make use of that with
YASim.
Use a suggested exit method as described in the SDL_Quit man page. (fgOSExit() is still uncalled in both fg_os.cxx (glut) and fg_os_sdl.cxx, which makes these functions kind-of useless.) The other changes are fixes for gcc 3.3.4 warnings.

I just got the virtual runway hud projection working on all views and
2D & 3D HUDs. It is working awesome(see below). I have attached every
file that was modified (hud.hxx, hud.cxx, and the default.xml for the hud)
and every file that was added (hud_rwy.cxx and runwayinstr.xml).
Just a quick overview of how the instrument works.
The virtual runway is projected by getting the "cockpit view" of the
runway in 3D and projecting the points on to the 2D HUD. Therefore, the
virtual runway will be displayed the same in every view. For example,
you can land an aircraft from the "Tower View" by flying the HUD. Also
if you're in "Cockpit View" and it is centered then the virtual runway
lines will perfectly outline the actual runway. I am getting the active
runway via the wind like done in the ATC classes, which may need changed.
Also, I made the assumption the view 0, in view manager, is always the
cockpit view, which may need changed as well.
The runway configuration file will allow you to specify a center offset
(x,y) and a bounding box (width,height). You can also configure the line
stipple pattern for the outside and the center line. For instance, if
you wanted a 0xFAFA pattern, then specify 64250 as the value. If you
want a solid line, you can specify -1 or 65535 (0xFFFF) and zero will
turn the line off. It also draws a runway indication arrow when the
runway is not in the HUD or it can be drawn all the time if arrow_always
is true. The arrow will point in the direction of the runway (2D) by
rotating around the center at a radius of arrow_radius. If you wish to
turn the arrow off, you must set the arrow_scale <=0. The arrow really
should be 3D arrow that points to the runway (or points in the direction
of the aircraft-to-runway vector).
Add some controls required for carrier operations:

should be 1.0 if the launchbar is lowered, that means the aircraft should now
be arrested at the catapult.

The moving ai models will jump around realtive to the moving aircraft model.
I can see that with the carrier but others have noticed that too with ai
aircraft before.
The reason is that all SGSystems are called with a dt value which is not
necessarily a multiple of 1/hz.
In contrast, most FDM's use the _calc_multiloop function from FGInterface
which forces the time update to be a multiple of 1/hz for the FDM aircraft.
As a result, in the worst case, the FDM aircraft has moved nearly 1/hz seconds
further than the rest of flightgear (1/120sec*300kts that is about 1.3m).
That patch forces the time update to be a multiple of 1/hz.

- atc610x.cxx: Much code has moved into the configurable input mapper
(ATC-Inputs.cxx) and the remaining input massaging code has moved into
the atcsim.nas module.
We have decided that hardcoded initialization of instruments and systems is
bad. So we remove them.
Hardcoded initialization is bad because it can't be overridden from config
files or from the command line. We prefer to do it through config files that
should be, eventually, aircraft specific (*-set.xml), not global
(preferences.xml).
I attach the latest version of Nimitz. The textures have been improved. A glide-path has been added, it is on by default, but can be switched off by means of the properties browser: /ai/models/ship/controls/glide-path. The origin has been adjusted to the turning pivot and approximate roll center.
Modified AiShip files are also attached. These allow the radius of the turning circle of a ship to be input. The turning circle is adjusted for speed and rudder angle. Roll has been corrected so that a ship leans out of a turn, not inwards like an aircraft. The roll angle is adjusted for speed and rudder angle (yes, application of more rudder reduces roll angle - rudders act as stabilizers).

The caption should already be set when the window is opened. This is
important for some window managers. (KDE's kwin, for example, can store
special settings for certain windows, such as "no border" and "always
on top". KDE uses the window title to determine if a special rule is
to be applied. KDE will be made more tolerant, too.)
Here are files to get automated contrails working. I've set up contrails for
the 737, using my simple, untextured contrail model. Vivian has made another
contrail model, but I'm still trying to get his to work. I'm hoping others
will try to make contrail models also.
Here's some code that defines a top to thermals. When the top of a thermal is
reached the strength is phased-out linearly over the next 100 feet of
altitude. At first I tried just capping the thermal at the top, but the
change in thermal strength was too fast for the FDM to handle well.
Included is a new version of the thermal scenario that includes a top
(height-msl) to the thermal. The default value is 5000 feet.

The next step will be to give the compass some angular momentum so
that it does not snap instantly to a heading, and so that it can

As a result of recent requests, I've implemented the ability to switch off
aerodynamic stabilisation:

I've made an encoder and a transponder. The transponder gets C-Mode altitude
information from the encoder. These two might not be very usefull right now,
but I think they might come in handy when the ATC network gets going.
input.cxx allocates memory for js->getNumAxes() axes and for jsCaps.wNumButtons
or MAX_JOYSTICK_BUTTONS buttons per joystick. But it doesn't check if some
xml config defines bindings for more axes/buttons, in which case it writes
to unallocated memory and causes crashes. This is a real world example:
sidewinder-force-feed-pro.xml defines 7 axes, but only newer versions of
this js do actually have that many. Older ones (-> gameport) don't. The patch
drops unused and unusable bindings.
I've added two new debug log types for the instrumentation and systems. They
used to use the autopilot debug log, because I couldn't figure out how to
make new log types. Well, now I have figured it out. ;-)
This will modify menubar.cxx/hxx so that it exports the
entire menubar (from menubar.xml) to the property tree, so that it can
now be changed dynamically using Nasal's setprop() instruction and
afterwards running a newly added fgcommand to update the menubar
based on those changes using the appropriate menubar path within
the property tree.
By default the menubar from menubar.xml will be stored within:
/sim/menubar/default

I think I found the problem in props.hxx. I have an exception when copying properties. An alias to a property that has no value trigger this exception. The code that generate that is in AIManager.cxx :

Instrumentation and systems are now configureable from xml files. The two
generic configurations generic-systems.xml and generic-instrumentation.xml
configures the systems and instrumentation as it was hardcoded. You can
override the generic configurations in a similar way as you override the
autopilot configuration.
I've added some digital filters to the autopilot. They are all low-pass
filters that filter away high frequency signals/noise. There are 4 different
filters:
1. Exponential - The algorithm is essentially the same as the one used in the
fgGetLowPass() function.
2. Double exponential - Two exponential filters in series. This filter has a
"steeper" frequency response curve. It filters "better" than the single
exponential.
3. Moving average - Averages a number of inputs.
4. Noise spike - limits the amount that the output value can change from one
sample to the next.
Filters 1 and 2 are characterised by it's filter-time in seconds. For filter 3
you have to set the number of input samples to average over. For filter 4 you
set the maximum allowed rate of change as [1/s]. Since the sampling interval
(dt) isn't constant we have to calculate the maximum allowed change for every
update.
Example of a double exponential filter with filter time 0.1 seconds, that is
1/0.1 = 10 Hz.

As I had reported on 2004/8/4 00:02:56 ("yasim + bo105 + vrp + @#%$#@ == argh!")
there must be a bug somewhere in YASim, which is responsible for the Bo105
turning around the FDM origin (nose tip) rather than the CG. Some people assumed
that I was just another victim of the "view offset" illusion, but this wasn't
and isn't the case.
Maik Justus (the rotor man) has now supposedly found the bug in YASim[1].

Today I successfully generated a 20*1024 x 20*768 (20480x15360) resolution
screen shot. If you rendered that at 100 dpi it would cover a poster of
about 17 feet by 12.8 feet.
Good luck trying to display something that big or convert it to anything
useful on a typical PC. :-)

The calculations are only applicable to ballistic
objects, and then strictly one shape: non boat-tailed bullets/shells, so
I've put them in AIBallistic rather than AIBAase. For all inputs, Cd
should be the sub-sonic value, so bullets will need changing.

I'm attaching a small change to Andy's dialog.cxx that I needed
to make so that it enables XML/Nasal-dialogs to also contain
puLargeInput boxes.
The text will be retrieved/buffered from/within a specified
property tree, like:

The calculation of submodel mass from weight has been moved from AIBallistic
to Submodel so that it is calculated only once, rather than on every
iteration as a present. The parameter <contents> has been added, primarily
so that droptanks will have the proper mass. It is the path to an
appropriate property containing a weight in lbs.
Care has to be taken with the use of <contents> because after a reset there
appears to be a delay in submodel instantiation (dt not properly reset???)
and the weight property is not always picked up before it is set to zero in
the key bindings. Slightly hard to explain. It works fine if FGFS has not
been reset though. There is a partial solution which involves the rejigging
of the fuel and gui nasal scripts, but there is still the visible delay in
instantiation to be resolved. I've nearly done the nasal fixes, which will
form part of an update to the Hunter only. I'll probably complete those
later today.
The value of rho (air density) varies with height. (Including the upper
stratosphere, ust in case someone wants to model ICBMs.) The standard
atmosphere is used (based on a sea-level temperature of 15 deg C.).

use of rho, temperature, pressure, etc.
I have added <Cd> and <weight> to the input parameters in the submodels.xml
script. Raw data may be used, thus avoiding the need to guestimate <eda>.
Eda remains, but should now be used to enter the proper cross-sectional
area.
Split up main.cxx into a program manegement part (which remains in
main.cxx) and a render part (the new renderer.?xx files). Also turn
the renderer into a small class of it's own. At this time not really
exctining because most of the stuff is still global, but it allows us
to slowly migrate some of the global definitions into the new class.
The FGRenderer class is now managed by globals, so to get the renderer
just call gloabals->get_renderer()
At some pijt it might be a good idea to also turn the remaining code in
main into a class of it's own. With a bit of luck we end up with a more
robust, and better maintainable code.
I had to reverse a number of signs to get it right. I took the opportunity
to add roll to the submodel so that droptanks will come off with the right
orientation. I have neither added the rotational speed to the submodel, nor
yaw, so if you release droptanks with significant roll rate or yaw angle on
the aircraft the submodel will not be quite right. Straight and level, or
nearly so, is fine.
paging system much more robust when position change is very rapid and sporadic.
Recall that we must load 3d models in the main render thread because model
loading can trigger opengl calls (i.e. with texture loading) and all opengl
calls *must* happen in the main render thread.
To accomplish this we load the base tile in the pager thread and build a work
queue of external models that need to be loaded. We never allow a tile to be
paged out of the tile cache until all it's pending model loads are complete.
However, when changing position very rapidly, we can quickly create a huge
backlog of pending model loads because we are changing positions faster than we
can load the associated models for the existing tiles. The end result is
that tiles that are long out of range can't be removed because there is still
a huge backlog of pending model load requests and memory blows up.
This change being committed allows the tile paging system to remove tiles
if they are out of range, even when there are pending models to load. The
model loading code in the render thread can now check to see if the tile
exists and discard any model load request for tiles that no longer exist.
This situation should never occur in normal operation, but could occur in
"contrived" situations where an external script was rapidly changing
the simulator position to then be able to query FG terrain height, and doing
this for a large number of points that are distributed across a large area.
The maths, so far, is now correct. Roll and pitch are now both in the
correct sense. The aircraft velocity is added correctly to the
submodel velocity, and the submodel is now visible when instantiated.
However, the velocity is measured at the aircraft centre. To be totally
correct we ought to take into account the aircraft's rotational
velocity. We have pitch rate and roll rate available, but not yaw rate
(small anyway).
Here are some things I've added to the submodel code.
First, I added a first_time value that is true when the trigger is pressed and
false when the trigger is released. The true value is also made false after
the first pass through release(). Release() then uses this to force the
first dt (per salvo) to be zero. I was hoping this would make the submodel
appear closer to the airplane, but I don't notice a difference with the
tracers. In a prior test I found that the first dt is about 2.5 times larger
than subsequent ones. Maybe this will be effective with slower submodels,
like smoke, contrails, etc.
Secondly, I updated the IC.elevation and IC.azimuth calcs to correctly add in
the yaw and pitch offsets, corrected for bank angle. Actually this is still
an estimation. A proper calculation will sum the submodels vector with the
airplane's vector. Until that's done only models which are fired forward
will have proper IC.
Testing revealed that the code was not reading y-offset - a
typo in the original code, and roll was in the wrong sense. All readily
fixable, and it now works.
I've added another parameter to the submodel - wind.
It's activated by the entry <wind>true</wind> in the ../submodel.xml file.
If true, the submodel is affected by the local wind, otherwise not. The
parameter defaults to false. This is useful for exhausts and smoke, and
possibly all objects.
Attached are the modified files to add buoyancy as a parameter for a
ballistic object. It may be set by adding
<buoyancy>x</buoyancy> to the submodel .xml file, where x is the appropriate
value (ft per sec2):

If <buoyancy>x</buoyancy> is not used, then there is no effect on the
current ballistic model
Silly me. I was starting the timer at zero, so the first tracer didn't fly
until 0.25 seconds after pulling the trigger. Now the timer starts at the
same value as "delay", so the first round comes out immediately.
Also, I've added an optional configuration attribute that allows you to change
the ballistics of the submodel. This allows parachutes, or anything else
that has ballistics different from a bullet. The attribute is called "eda",
which is the equivalent drag area. Default value is 0.007, which gives the
same ballistics as the current tracers. Increasing this value gives more
drag. A value of 2.0 looks good for a parachute.

Last night I sent these new files to Vivian to fix a problem he found. Since
we can have more than one submodel we need more than one "count" property.
The new code creates a property systems/submodels/submodel[n]/count for each
submodel. Vivian is using this count property for his sound.
Here is an update for the submodel system. This will allow submodels to be
defined for any aircraft, and there are no default submodels. To use this
submodel system you need to set up a binding (slight change in property name
from last one, but you can use any property name you like, as long as it
matches the name in the submodels.xml file, see below):

Then you put the submodel configuration file in your aircraft's directory.
I've attached a file, submodels.xml, that can be used to define a gun that
works just like the former one did.
There are two things remaining to be done. One is to change the function
SubmodelSystem::transform() to properly position the submodel. This will
require some complicated matrix code that I might borrow from Yasim.
Well here's some tracer stuff. If fiddled around with submodel.cxx. It now
does what it says - you need to put this:

In the *-set.xml file NOT within <sim></sim>. Trouble is it still defaults
to serviceable=true, but it also defaults to amount=0. Unless this bit of
code is included it wont run, so other models can't fire inappropriate
tracer. Revised submodel.cxx file attached.
I've changed to a non-billboard solution. I tried to make the viewing angle
of the tracer less than 180 degs, but failed. Close enough I think. It's
still a bit big, but a reasonable compromise. .AC file attached.
I remain concerned about the tracer colour. In practice, red is better (and
it's what I am used to) but David seems set on white, and I don't want to
upset him. I'm going to adjust the texture a bit more tomorrow.
Right now the code is not very configurable, and there is only one submodel per airplane possible. It is implemented as an SGSubSystem, just like the electrics, vacuum, etc. systems. To make it work you need to make a release binding like this (for my joystick trigger):

Future improvements will include:
1) more configurability, so the user can create multiple submodels, and can assign them different locations, and pitch and yaw adjustments, and nitial velocity.
2) sound?
3) a more accurate calculation of the submodels location at any pitch/roll/yaw.
4) a way to pre-load the model, so the AI code doesn't have to parse the model every time it creates an instance.
I think that's all of it.
All necessary elements for an ADF gauge had been migrated from
Cockpit/kr_87.cxx to Instrumentation/adf.cxx. Migrating the sound
related elements was apparently planned, but not done yet. This
intermediate state broke the ident morse sound: it couldn't get
turned off and it always indicated "SF", regardless of the tuned-in
frequency. The following patches continue the migration:

this was always only meant to be a test program for the metar lib, but now
that people are referring to it as a means to get metar reports, I think a
usage info is desirable. The list of test ids, on the other hand, isn't
necessary any more. This can still be handled by a Makefile or the commandline.
I'm all for keeping this tool in cvs, however. And also the not-used stuff
therein is a welcome source for how to use the SGMetar class.
This is a workaround for an issue where the xml dialogs were shrinking on
subsequent pops.

2 pixel border on dialogs is at best a minor feature, and probably
invisible since the sub-frames all have their own padding.
Clearly the right fix would be to find out where the code is getting
confused by the previous layout. In principle, the layout should be
idempotent: if you don't change the layout constraints, it shouldn't
change its layout. There's still a bug in there somewhere.
I've included the latest fixes to the Traffic Manager/AI flightplan generation
code. Most of the code changes are in AIFllightplan.cxx. This is the code
that runs without depending on predefined FlightPlans in
#FG_ROOT/Data/AI/Flightplans.i
As suggested by Dave, I've also added a new property in
preferences.xml: /sim/traffic-manager/enabled, which is used to control
whether or not the traffic manager is active.
I'm still working on a few more 737 traffic patterns, those are going to take
a little longer, so I didn't want to wait sending in this code.
Finally, I haven't put much effort into ensuring "aeronautical correctness" in
this version yet. The code works on my system, but what the AI plane do may
actaully be quite rediculous. But I'd like to leave that for the next
version.
Stub in hooks for Propeller feathering controls and the turbo prop "condition"
lever.
I added a line in FGFDM.cpp to force control properties to exist if they
don't already. This way you can specify anything you want and find them
in the property browser, otherwise no one else may create them and you are
stuck.
In PropEngine::solve() the code original sets _running = true at the
beginning and then sets running = false at the end. I changed this to
save the current value at the start, set to true, solve(), and then
restore the original value at the end. That way if we start off with
_running = true, we don't have to hack up the calc() routine which wasn't
using the value anyway.
Finally I added some very initial support to shut down a turbine engine
(_running = false) when the condition lever goes to zero.
for localizers. I further hacked this to support GS and DME transmitters
(although Robin's DME transmitter data doesn't convey orientation
unfortunately.)
I have 3 issues that are fixed by this set of patches.
1. In extensions.cxx
#else if !defined( WIN32 ) must be changed by
#elif !defined( WIN32 ) because the text after #else
seems to be ignored
2. banner is not available on windows, only cygwin
3. ANSI escape sequences are not interpreted on the
windows console. We just have garbage that is hard
to read.

- Track a timeout value so we can optionally hide the mouse pointer after
some user specified timeout period.
- in doMouseMotion() always update m.x and m.y even if we return early because
pui wanted the event. Without this, we can't reliably detect motion vs.
inactivity.
- in _update_mouse() add a dt parameter so we can decriment the timeout value
in "real" time.
- in _update_mouse() optionally hide the mouse pointer if m.timeout goes to
zero. Restore the pointer (and the timeout counter) if the mouse is moved.
will delay it's reply by 50ms. The ground station can change it's reply delay
to trick the airborn dme unit into reporting a distance that is offset from
the true distance by some constant value. In FG we model this by subtracting
a fixed distance from the actual distance.
It is thus possible in our implimentation for the displayed distance to become
negative. This patch clamp DME distance to a minimum value of 0.00 so it can
never go negative.
A good elevation is critical for proper glide slope modeling. This patch
assigns the average field elevation to any ILS component that doesn't have
a valid elevation.
Also, for an ILS approach, use the GS transmitter elevation for glide slope
calculations rather than the localizer elevation, in some cases this can
make a big difference.
Wouldn't it be better to prepare the whole list of paths (or two
separate ones for Terrain/Objects if necessary) in FGGlobals::set_fg_scenery,
and to pass the vector<string>s to FGTileEntry::load? It doesn't seem to make
a lot of sense to split the path up, modify it, mount it together to one string
again, and then let FGTileEntry::load split it up again.

As fg_scenery is now a string_list, we don't need initialization. Furthermore,
this list is cleared with every set_fg_scenery() call.
ctor: create default dir from fg_root if necessary. Otherwise check all paths
of --fg-scenery/FG_SCENERY: If the path doesn't exist, ignore it. If it contains
a dir Terrain and/or Objects, then only add that to the list. If it contains
neither, then use the path as is.

Trivial: don't split a "base path", but use the given path_list as is.
(I considered a variable name "path_list" better suited than "search".)

No more fiddling with sub-paths. This has to be delivered by get_fg_scenery
already.
Here's some additions to AI that allow refueling from an AI tanker (the actual
onload of fuel must be handled by the user's FDM of course, this just lets
the FDM know that the user is in position to refuel).
I've added a new class of AIAircraft called "tanker". It uses the same
performance struct as a jet transport. An AI tanker is just like an AI jet
transport, except it uses the already-existing radar data to control the
boolean property systems/refuel/contact. The code change was minimal.
An AI tanker can be created like this:

This puts a tanker over KSFO at 3000 feet, in a left-hand orbit. When the
user gets within refueling range (contact position) then the property
systems/refuel/contact will be true. Otherwise it is false.
The dimensions of the refueling envelope are pretty rough right now, but still
usable. The user must be behind the tanker (ie. radar y_offset > 0). The
user must be at or below the tanker's altitude (ie. radar elevation > 0).
The user's lat/lon must be within 250 feet of the tanker's lat/lon (ie. radar
range_ft < 250). This last requirement is loose because the radar data is
only updated every 100 ms, which is accurate enough for radar use, but
which is sloppy for air refueling. This could be tightened up by increasing
the radar update rate to once every sim cycle.
I'm going to add a light to the T-38 instrument panel that will monitor the
property systems/refuel/contact. This will make it easier to explore the
boundaries of the refueling envelope.
Here's some new AI stuff.
1) AI objects must now be defined in a scenario file, not in preferences.xml
or a *-set file. (Of course this doesn't prevent objects from being created
dynamically, as with Durk's traffic manager).
2) A new demo_scenario file is attached. It creates 3 aircraft, a sailboat,
and a thunderstorm.
3) Objects without flightplans live forever.
4) FGAIShip::ProcessFlightplan() is not yet implemented.
5) preferences.xml should now define only <enabled> and <scenario>
These change add some code that at initialization time will snap all
localizers into perfect alignment with their runways. It's my experience
that the DAFIF/FAA data reports runway and localizer headings to a level
of precision that is great for making charts, or adjusting your OBS, etc.
But the level of precision of this data can be far enough off to make you
visibly *un*aligned with the runway when the CDI needle is centered.
There are probably cases where the localizer isn't really perfectly
aligned with the runway, or intentionally misaligned to avoid obstacles
or terrain. So I have made this configurable for those that trust the
data more than I do. Just set "/sim/navdb/auto-align-localizers" to
true/false in the preferences file to turn this feature on or off in the
code.
- FG now directly supports Robin's native nav database file format.
- His latest data now separates out dme, gs, loc, and marker beacon
transmitters rather than lumping them all into a single "ILS" record.
- These new data structure changes prompted me to do some code restructuring
so that internally these different types of navaids are all kept as
separate lists and searched and handled separately.
- This structural change had a cascading affect on any code that
references or uses the nav databases. I've gone and "touched" a lot of
nav related code in a lot of places.
- As an added bonus, the new data (and code) adds DME bias so these will
all now read as they do in real life.
- Added Navaids/navdb.cxx and Navaids/navdb.hxx which provide a front
end loaders for the nav data.
- Added Navaids/navrecord.hxx which is a new "generic" nav data record.
- Removed Navaids/ils.hxx, Navaids/ilslist.cxx, Navaids/ilslist.hxx,
Navaids/mkrbeacons.cxx, and Navaids/mkrbeacons.hxx which are all now
depricated.
1. Removed aircraft roll on ground.

3. Updated flightplans to include <on-ground>
4. Fixed property indexing, so all AI aircraft have their own property branch
The default value of <on-ground> is false, so you only need to specify it when
on the ground. For takeoff you need to specify <on-ground>true</on-ground>
for the first waypoint, and for the acceleration waypoint. For landing you
need to specify it for the touchdown point and any taxi points.
One problem. WARNING **** There is a bug in the way the property system
works, which causes a segfault, but I don't know if the problem is in the
property code, or in how I'm using it. After an AI object terminates, if you
access the property tree through the property browser the sim will segfault.
First, preferences.xml will define the scenario filename.
For now, the other way of defining ai objects still works, so the sailboat
stays in preferences.xml. Later, I'll move the sailboat into the demo
scenario. If no scenario filename is given, then no scenario will be
processed.
I changed the demo scenario to create two 737's, one takes off on runway 01L,
and the other takes off on runway 01R. This will make a good demo for the ai
system. One problem, if you takeoff on 28L/R right away, you might run into
the taking-off 737's, or be scared.
Here's the newest AI stuff.
The AIManager at init() creates a new scenario. Right now the
default_scenario is hard coded in, but eventually the AIManager should get
the scenario filename from preferences.xml.
The scenario defines which AI objects will be created. Right now it only
creates AIAircraft, but this is easily extended. The scenario also defines
which flightplan will be assigned to the airplane. Scenario config files go
in data/Data/AI.
The Airplane gets a pointer to a FlightPlan object. Each airplane should get
its own flightplan object, even if two airplanes have the same flight plan.
This is because the flightplan maintains the iterator pointing to the
current waypoint, and two airplanes might be at different locations (for
instance if they were created at different times). The flight plan files go
in data/Data/AI/FlightPlans.
When the airplane gets to the waypoint named "END" it vanishes. The
AIAircraft destructor deletes its flight plan (if it has one).
The last waypoint is a place holder only. I called mine
<WPT><NAME>"EOF"</NAME></WPT>.

The text widget can now be meaningfully associated with a property; in
PUI, it's "value" isn't the same thing as its label, but we can hack
things to treat them symmetrically.
Commit an experimental "live" property that can be set on widgets to
cause them to update their values every frame. This works great for
text widgets, as above. Note that this synchronization is input-only:
no support is provided (or needed -- the GUI only changes when the
user does something) for writing those properties out every frame.

This is important for the pending sound and rotor disc changes (and of course
for realism).
Fix the leg distance calculation to display nautical miles instead of meters.
It turns out that Simgear already has a range normalize function, so I use
that one instead.
for a while, it turned out to be pretty easy to implement. Also, the
property picker is now non-modal, I presume the modality wasn't an
intentional feature.
I've added a vertical navigation capability to the GPS module. One can input
two waypoints, wp[0] and wp[1], with altitude. If the altitudes differ, then
the altitude deviation from a "straigth" line from wp[0] to wp[1] is
calculated. The true course and course deviation from wp[0] to wp[1] is also
calculated. All this can be found in the wp subdir where one also finds the
wp[0] and wp[1] subdirs.
All this has to be done through the property browser. Maybe I should make a
gui window for the GPS!
"slow/windmilling propeller" regime. I'm happy with the foundations
of the solution, but this hasn't been complete tested yet. The
solution behavior seems fine on the planes I tried.
PistonEngine class has grown an "Engine" superclass. Some other stuff
moved around too, and I cleaned up some property naming while I was in
there. This hasn't been tested very thorougly, hopefully I didn't
break anything.
configure and compile out-of-the-box on a MinGW target:
Use -lSDL instead of -lglut32 on windows builds when --enable-sdl
is set.
Link against alut.dll in addition to openal32.dll.
Replace BSD bcopy() with ANSI C memmove() in a few places. This is
simpler than trying to abstract it out as a platform dependency in a
header file; bcopy() has never been standard.
The ENABLE_THREADS handling has changed to be set to 0 when threads
are not in use. This breaks expressions like #ifdef ENABLE_THREADS.
Replace with a slightly more complicated expression. It might have
been better to fix the configure.ac script, but I didn't know how and
this whole setting is likely to go away soon anyway.
The MinGW C runtime actually does include snprintf, so only MSVC
builds (and not all WIN32 ones) need _snprintf in JSBSim/FGState.cpp
Building on a platform with no glut at all exposed some spots where
plib/pu.h was being included without a toolkit setting (it defaults to
glut). Include fg_os.hxx first.
And when still using glut, glut.h has a bizarre dependency on a
_WCHAR_T_DEFINED symbol. It it's not defined, it tries to redefine
(!!) wchar_t to disasterous effect.

I've added a tracking bug to the gps. This is of course very similar to a
heading bug for a DG. I don't know if this is the common name, but I feel
that for a gps the name tracking bug is more accurate than heading bug. A
true bug error and a magnetic bug error is calculated and shifted into the
-180 to 180 range so that they can be used by autopilots.
I've also fixed a property name that crept in when I had to change back to
indicated-***. Back then I accidentally changed the desired course name to
"indicated-course". The property that is supposed to be the input for the
desired course should naturally be named something like "desired-course", and
definitely _not_ "indicated-course". If this name change breaks anything it
should be fixed in the other end.
I've also commented out a lot of #includes that I don't think is needed. I'm
on Suse 9.0 now, and it builds fine here, but this might be a problem for
different platforms I guess we have to cross our fingers.
my code was accidentally drawing the cockpit twice
in view 0. This patch should fix the problem of
lights not seen through canopies or prop discs.
It was also drawing the lights ( ground and rw )
after the clouds, so they were not obscured by
them.
command bindings accessible from XML. This still probably isn't a final
solution (which would drive the HUD from propery values), but it's a step
in the right direction anyway.
This update contains a change to not overwrite the altitude-ft preset during
"onground" start. The change also prevents a ground trim issue with the
JSBSim fdm when a "reset" is done by FlightGear.
this patch is to clear a problem that I sometimes
encounter : FG locks when hitting the cancel button
of a dialog. In fact, an interator is always invalid
when it was used to erase a member of a collection.
The braces are here to help my debugger, and I also
removed a warning about unused variable.
I restored the output to cout / cerr
for the options and the warning for the version mismatch.
There is a dummy SG_LOG to allow the windows version to
popup the console.
The snapshot rendering use multipass now.
- We need to be able to support a per engine master bat/alt switch.
- Forgot to write the gear level state into the network structure.
native_fdm:
- renamed EGT->egt for consistancy.
- added manifold pressure to the structure.
FG_ENABLE_MULTIPASS_CLOUDS must be defined to enable
the algorithm. I made this because the stencil buffer
must be initialized at the beginning of the program and
OpenGL can fallback to software rendering if it can't
find a visual with stencil buffer. I didn't touch the
configure script, so CXXFLAGS=-DFG_ENABLE_MULTIPASS_CLOUDS
must be set before running ./configure.
If FG_ENABLE_MULTIPASS_CLOUDS is defined, the main render
loop begins by reading the /sim/rendering/multi-pass-clouds
property. It is a boolean property so there are only two
quality levels. false means no multi pass and no use of
the stencil buffer, true means an additionnal pass for
both upper and lower cloud layers.
The algorithms are as follow :

The cloud rendering doesn't update the depth buffer.
This means that models overwrite clouds above the viewer.
This is only noticeable for tall buildings and when
flying very low. Also, drawing low clouds after models
means that they are not blended with models' translucent
surfaces. Large transparent area require alpha test
enabled and AI aircraft canopy are making holes. The
pilot's aircraft being rendered at the end, there is no
problem with canopy or prop disc.

The assumptions made by this algoritm are that the terrain
is not transparent ( should be true in all cases and
that there are no clouds between the aircraft and the viewer.
Assuming these facts, there should be no blending bugs.
The screenshot rendering is not updated yet.
the keyboard modifiers outside of a key event handler, so adding the
fgGetKeyModifiers() call to doMouseMotion was broken. The user could
see "phantom" modifier keys.
trying the --show-aircraft option, I noticed that I had
no output. This is because there are still output to
cout or cerr, that are not triggering my console patch
for windows. The patch attached use SG_LOG instead.
A request to hit a key is also added because otherwise,
the console window will disappear as soon as the program
stop.
This problem is minor though given the fact that fgfs.exe
is shipped with fgrun that do show the available aircraft
in a much nicer manner.

This one looks pretty good for now, pending work on the propeller to
get its low speed drag in line with reality.

it gets picked up by the Nasal code.
This is a fix for my earlier "Remove some hardcoded dependencies between fdm,
viewer and acmodel" patch. The problem was discovered when testing the
wrightFlyer.

This patch adds the ability to do a simple scaling of input without having to

The message 'Alert: catching up on tile delete queue'
comes from the fact that 48 tiles are scheduled and
added to the cache at startup before the plane location
is initialized. My proposed patch is to initialize
SGLocation with an invalid position and detect this
fact before scheduling tiles. I prefer to do that
rather than testing for lon and lat being 0,0 because
it is a valid position and someone could want to fly
near Accra.
This patch is for windows only. It hides the console window
until there is a message to print. It only support SG_LOG,
that I think is the right way to display something in FG.
Add FGPredictor class to xmlauto. Add support for horizontal navigation based
on flight track as opposed to heading. Add crosstrack-error support to nav.
Simplify error adjust calculation for horizontal nav (better interception).
Fixed potential divide by zero that was producing nan issues in the xmlauto
code.
I've done som more work on the gps instrument.
- You can now input airport-, nav- or fix-ID to select a waypoint.
- You have to specify either "airport", "nav" or "fix" in the waypoint-type
property (some fixes and navs have identical IDs).
- Formatted the time to waypoint output.
- Cleaned up and changed some propery names (wp-heading -> wp-bearing).
- I've also added a name member to the FGNav class so that the gps instrument
can get the name of the nav.
- Changed the airport name parsing in simple.cxx.
I've done some changes to xmlauto.cxx.
Only calculate the derivate filtering if derivate time Td is greater than
zero. This means that one can set Td=0.0 in the xml file to completely remove

Setting the integrator time Ti to zero doesn't make sense, right! I've
modified so that setting Ti to zero results in the integral action being
completely removed.

- NMEA output: I'm slightly confused but it appears that a real GPS outputs
traditional unix line endings on it's gps strings, we were outputing DOS
CR/LF which was causing some confusion. This changes the line ending
convention to match that of a real gps.

explicitely. This value has always been feet, but there were a couple places
in the code that assumed this elevation was meters. The result was that you
could park directly over the top of the Black Forest VOR (112.50) NE of KCOS
and get a dme reading of 2.5 or so. This problem is now resolved.
I added some things to the AI stuff to improve the AIThermal processing.
Before, all the thermals were processed in order, and the last one overwrote
the prior one. Now, only the data from the nearest thermal is kept. This
way a tile can be populated with many thermals, and (as long as they have the
same diameter) the one nearest the airplane correctly takes effect. This
will make us ready for the next step, "auto-thermaling", where FlightGear's
tile manager can cover a tile with thermals, and set the thermal strength
based on land-use type.
I moved the enumerated object_type to the base class. When an AI object is
created it now sets the _otype variable in the base class. This lets the AI
manager find out what kind of AI object it is dealing with, using the base
pointer. I also added a function isa() to the base class, so the manager can
process objects differently based on their type.
The AI manager now sends AIThermal processing to a different function, where
only the data from the nearest thermal is kept. After the manager processes
all the AI objects, then the results from the nearest thermal are applied to
wind-from-down.
occasionally cause a large number of valid stations to be flagged as invalid.
This *seemed* like a "race condition" type problem because there were some
assumptions in the communication between the main process and the threaded
loader which if they broke down could lead to this problem.
In the process of removing this ambiguity, I restructured the threaded
(and non-threaded) metar fetching code a bit. Some of the top level logic
(which Erik politely left untouched) didn't make nearly as much sense in the
context of a threaded metar loader and could have contributed to some of the
wierdness I was seeing.
Here's a new batch of AI code which includes a working radar instrument.
I put the radar calculations into the existing AIAircraft class. It was
easier that way, and it can always be migrated out later if we have to.
Every tenth sim cycle the AIManager makes a copy of the current user state
information. When the AIAircraft updates it uses this information to
calculate the radar numbers. It calculates:
1) bearing from user to target
2) range to target in nautical miles
3) "horizontal offset" to target. This is the angle from the nose to the
target, in degrees, from -180 to 180. This will be useful later for a HUD.
4) elevation, in degrees (vertical angle from user's position to target
position)
5) vertical offset, in degrees (this is elevation corrected for user's pitch)
6) rdot (range rate in knots, note: not working yet, so I commented it out)
and three items used by the radar instrument to place the "blip"
7) y_shift, in nautical miles
8) x_shift, in nautical miles
9) rotation, in degrees
The radar instrument uses the above three items, and applies a scale factor to
the x-shift and y-shift in order to match the instrument's scale. Changing
the display scale can be done entirely in the XML code for the instrument.
Right now it's set up only to display a 40 mile scale.
The radar is an AWACS view, which is not very realistic, but it is useful and
demonstrates the technology. With just a little more work I can get a HUD
marker. All I need to do there is make a bank angle adjustment to the
current values.
I went through the AI code to put the "bank" node back into the config file,
so the models can fly circles. While I was in there I made some other
changes.
*) Moved the initialization of roll, tgt-roll, pitch ... etc, from init()
into the constructor, so it wouldn't over-write the config settings.
*) Changed the altitude getter to remove the meters-to-feet conversion. The
altitude is kept internally in feet. Only the scenery code needs meters.
*) Added "bank" item for config file (for type=aircraft). Left bank is
negative.
*) Added "rudder" item for config file (for type=ship). Left rudder is
negative. Internally this is stored in the "roll" variable, but the ship
model doesn't roll. It uses the "roll" variable for turning though.
The following puts a tanker at 3000 feet, 6 nm northwest of KSFO. On takeoff,
the tanker is visible over the hanger building at one-o'clock.

are many recognized limitations and inefficiencies with this entire approach,
however, it's a quick and dirty way to get something working, where before
we didn't.
The last change from Curt to Airports/simple.[ch]xx made
GUI/AirportList.cxx not compilable because of the loss of
a '*' in getAirport.
Also : fabs is not defined under MSVC unless <math.h> is
included.
updates based on the "closest" airport with metar data available. Note that
the web based query is in the main loop and causes brief sim pauses. Update
rate (once per minute) needs to be tweaked with, but is a good value for
testing.
